My first WBS prep, tips please!
    #14069337 - 03/05/11 01:19 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Hey everyone! thanks for this awesome compilation of information and helpful people you call the shroomery! i need some help at the moment...

I've made up RGS jars before, about a month old, i'm too freshly into this hobby to have great growth results, damn my impatience.

anyways, I'm going to do a combo of these for P. d'jamor, don't want to mess this up, any tips? This is my first WBS spawn prep

WBS Grain Spawn Prep by guest1

Measure out half jars of WBS
Rinse until clear water.
Soak 12-24 hours in water with some h202
Rinse 3x or more
Boil a pot of water on the stove on the highest setting
Turn the stove off and add the WBS
Wait 20 minutes (not more) and remove the WBS
Drain most of the water off (not 100% is critical, it should not be fully hydrated yet),
Put in jars, PC at 15 PSI for 75 min.

Modified perfect grain spawn(RR's videos)
1. Rinse the dirt out
2. Soak 12-24hrs with water, H2O2, knife tip of gypsum
3. Boil drain shake(drain in collander, loose and moist but not wet, 15 sec napkin test should show dry)
4. Gas exchange, filter lids of some sort
5. Sterilize

i'll be using citric's lid tek

thanks!

This is what I do.

Fill jar with wbs and water to soak overnight.
Drain the next night and rinse good.
Put in a pot of water, bring to a simmer (I do 20 mins).
Drain your wbs now. (I let it sit in strainer for another 10-20 mins)
Fill jars back up, and add gypsum if you like.
PC for 60 - 90 mins. (usually 60, but thats me there)

Always have great results using this, and great moisture content. Never have problems with contams (unless I mess up something with inoculation).

Goodluck.

you do not need to simmer if you are using it as spawn, and not fruiting off of it..

you can use FooMan's method for grain spawn with no issues at all.. essentially, you just boil water, remove from heat, throw in WBS, cover, and let sit.. then strain VERY well.. works great..

if you are going to fruit off of grain, then you should probably SIMMER (not boil) to get maximum moisture content..

Quote:

loose and moist but not wet, 15 sec napkin test should show dry)

not moist, but DRY on the outside.. you want the moisture on the inside of the WBS, not the outside.. it should not stick to a spoon, but should be soft enough to where you can split a kernel with your fingernails.. if you even lay a paper towel on it for 2 seconds and its wet, then its not ready.. PCing will help to kinda cook in the extra moisture, if any is left.. but there should be no standing pools in the jar after..

so yeah.. simmering is not needed if you are using the grain to spawn to a bulk sub.. if you are fruiting from WBS, then you should simmer, but just be careful not to bust a bunch of kernels.. giggity

h202 wont do anything to help at this stage

the PC will kill most of the shit anyway

u have to be careful when buying WBS seed

i try and find see that has NO cracked corn

cracked corn will make your wbs all slimy after you boil and the grains will stick together and give the myc a hard time if you use it.

i bought cracked corn wbs before and i had to rewash it after boiling and then boiled it again so it wasnt stiky

just added a lot of time

also i strain out the sunflower seeds and most of the other seeds that float when im rinshing the seed

i dont know if that matters all the much but in my case i try and find birdseed that doesnt have a lot of sunflower seeds as well

i follow RRs rye grain tek when using my WBS and get great results

its been done before but ive moved on to using a wbs/rye grain combo in my jars now

i wash my wbs like 4-5 times until its clear, removing all the floaty bits and putting that in the birdfeeder

then i soak overnight in a hot tap water and a smidge of gypsum

then i throw the pot onto the stove for 30 minutes

then drain

then spread it out on a tote lid to dry

after 45 minutes its ready to load into my jars and PC

it used to be said myc wouldn't colonize the sunflower seeds...this has been found out to be not true.. just fill bucket up with however much wbs you want to use, add water..remove all the floaters and then strain and rinse several times

soak 24 hours ( i use 50/50 water/coffee with gypsum ) and then simmer with the same water for 10-15 mins

straining is what takes the longest, which is about 1.5-2 hours.. stirring every half hour or so to allow to steam more.
