Green Mold
    #14069182 - 03/05/11 12:26 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Hello shroomery,

I have been a guest here and learned much, but must make my post one of shame. AFOF needs some advice on green mould.

Basically the story is that green mould has destroyed 3 monotub of AFOFS so far. Unacceptable losses and AFOF need to resolve the issue sooner than later. I will outline the procedures and materials AFOF is using and hopefully we can come up with an answer.

Here we go; the strain is golden teacher, and the spawn is rye grain/vermiculite. Roughly 5% vermiculite is added before pressure cooking to help regulate the moisture. The spawn seems to be working very well, full colonization in 4-5 days for a quart jar. Only 4 out of 95 jars have had a contaminations, 2 wet spot (brought about the addition of vermiculite), and 2 green mould. AFOF is of the opinion that the grain preparation and inoculation procedures are sound, is this correct?

The bulk substrate being used is a mixture of mulched wheat straw (less than 2 inch lengths), coir, h-poo and vermiculite. The substrate is balanced to a pH of 7.0 and pressure cooked in quart jars for 75 minutes.

Mono tubs are assembled using 10 healthy pure white rye jars, and 30 jars of sterilized substrate. Once the layering is done the substrate thickness is typically between 3.75 and 4.25 inches thick. Half a black garbage bag (one thickness of plastic) is cleaned with alcohol and carefully set on top of the substrate, and the edges tucked in. Lysol is sprayed on the surface and a sterile knife is used to cut 15-20 1" slits in the bag to allow gas exchange and prevent excessive moisture build up. The lid is put on and the mono tub is put in the shroom-room, a steady 84 degrees.

The plastic was left on for 10 days, at which point the surface was 75 percent colonized. The plastic was removed, after which the growth slowed, and within a week green mould had a foot hold in the 3 mono tubs. The tubs were sealed and disposed of to prevent any spreading of spores.

My friend’s friend would like to know what procedural changes you could recommend to help with his green mould issue. Or if anyone can think of better materials to use, add/remove etc.

Cheers,

Richard

Pasteurization is what you want to do to your substrate. Sterilization kills some of the good bacteria that the mushroom mycelium uses to quickly colonize the substrate.

Hello all,

  Much appreciation for the Quick responses;

The scale experiments AFOF has done previously indicated that moisture content is very critical to quick colonization, and therefore has designed equipment that  requires the use of jars or oven bags. The Reason for pressure cooking was simply one of logistics; he has the pressure cooking capacity to prepare 4 monotubs worth of substrate in a couple hours.

As far as he can figure, the key difference between sterilization and pasteurization is temperature. If he were still wishing to use jars/oven bags could he build a steamer similar to cybers design and pasteurize inside jars/ oven bags in such a unit, or is he missing an aspect of the steam chemically/physically interacting with the substrate through direct contact?

Aside from pasteurization is there anything else can be recommended to help resolve this issue?

  Thanks,

  Richard

Just pack the shit you wanna pasteurize in jars put some foil over the jar lids. Put that in you're pressure cooker without the lid on it and fill it up halfway to 3/4  with water. Put the jars in. Let heat up to boil for 5 minutes then turn off the stove. After half an hour do the same thing again and let it sit for about 45 minutes after that.
