How long will my WBS jars last w/o being inoculated?
    #14068293 - 03/04/11 09:04 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I have yet to receive my syringes, but they should be coming sometime next week. The thing is, I have the perfect opportunity to pressure cook my jars this weekend and I would like to know if my jars will keep until I choose to inoculate them sometime next week? Will they stay moist enough and sterile enough? Any suggestions or comments would be amazing, as I've NEVER done this before and have no prior knowledge.

as long as properly prepared they will be fine for a week sitting, just leave the foil on your jars until ready to inoculate.

This is going to depend largely on how hydrated your grains were upon loading them into their respected containers for sterilization, what your regions temperature and climate are like, and how well your PC works.  If you try and store your sterilied grain jars in temps above 86F they'll become fermented.

If your PC thoroughly sterilizes your WBS and you have proper grain jar lids, then your sterile WBS jars can last at room temperatures without becoming contaminted and'll be viable to inoculate so long as the WBS keeps a moisture content acceptable for running mycelium out on.

Hm. That helps a little, but I still have no idea what is too much hydration or too little or anything like that. I'm also not too confident in my procedure, although it looks a little safer than some of the other WBS teks I see on here. I'll PC them and I might do a few more jars once I get my actual spores.

I don't think my WBS will ferment or w/e. They are at room temperature in my dresser drawer, they still have yet to be PC, but they have been simmered and rinsed and whatnot. and my jars are set up for inoculation and sterilization.

Thanks!

Your jars haven't been PC'ed.  Your jars will then definitely develop a contamination(s) with in the next three days for they have not been sterilized.  PC your jars for storage before inoculation and store them at room temps..  If after you PC your jars and you have no moisture pooling at the bottom of the jars after they'v been PC'ed, then your grain's moisture content is correct and'll be good to store for at least a week.

if sterilized correctly, your jars can sit a month or more without contams.....not saying its recommended by any means but just saying

This is what I believe also. The only thing stopping me from saying they'd last 6 months on the shelf is the fact that humidity rises, and since you let the jars breathe through polyfill/tyvek, eventually you will lose alot of moisture.

But yeah, if you don't PC the jars right away, if you put them in the fridge you have a 3-5 day window, but 5 is really pushing it. Cold slows organic growth which can buy you some time. In theory, once you PC the jars, regardless of age, they'll be "clean", but anything that grew before the PC could have produced toxins that are still present after PC'ing.

Long story short, soak, simmer, PC in one day, then you're done. Spread over two days? Soak simmer, load into jars, put into fridge, PC first thing the next day.

agree moisture will be lost, thats why when i must wait for inoculation then i leave the foil on tight until im ready to nocc them up

im glad I bought a big bag of WBS then because I will have to redo all of this.. just to be on the safe side. I need all the extra help I can get, to make up for all the human error that will probably happen throughout my first grow.. :/ Thanks for the advice guys. makes sense to me!
