Job hunt strategies?
    #14066809 - 03/04/11 03:02 PM (13 years, 1 day ago)

I know im not the only one desperate for a job. i think we should all share tips and questions on job hunting.

Ive got a resume, and a generic cover letter that usually is just a quick run down of my previous experience, im actually not sure what the hell a cover letter is even for. any tips on that?

also i was planning on just randomly dropping by places like news stations, tv stations, ect.

but i not sure who to give my resume too, im worried that if i give it to the receptionist it will just get thrown in the trash a soon as i leave.

also anyone ever used linkin? ive got an account and i have no clue wtf the site is for.

for anyone looking for a crappy retail job, beware of the evil khronos personality test. a probably outdated answer key is here:

Don't just hand your resume or applications to front desk/counter people.

Ask to talk to a manager or the GM and personally hand it to them. Make a good first impression too.

Because the GM has nothing better to do than drop whatever he is doing and come talk to you.

Bad advice. Unless there's an HR department, in which case your application will be electronic.

Agreed.  This is my job hunting strategy.  The unemployed people I know have unrealistic expectations for their employment.

Yellowpages.com

Type in a city and an industry and get calling asking if they're hiring.

Granted I'm doing this for a specific, degree required field, and not just some part-time highschool diploma shit.

But this is my strategy and I've been able to submit two resumes + cover letters this way out of the 5-10 places I've called.

Yeah - sleep lots and don't get drunk the night before, dress snappy, and act like you have good reason to talk to the manager, to inform him or her about this fine opportunity to employ your services.

Go to a temp agency.

They can find anyone a job. Felons, illegal immigrants, child molesters, etc.

I recently got a job through a temp agency and I work with nothing but illegal immigrants, and my supervisor is a child molester.

Sounds like fun huh?

Make the cover letter and your resume specific to the job you apply for. This goes in particular for the cover letter. The purpose of the cover letter is to get the person who's doing the hiring to read your CV. If your cover letter does not make clear in one sentence why they should consider you as a likely candidate, then it fails and you're more likely to end up on the bottom of the pile. In your CV, try to tailor your competencies, experience and successes to the job you're applying for; highlight those aspects that you think are particularly relevant to the job at hand.
So a generic CV and cover letter are a good starting point, but if you do it right, you'll end up with a tailored version of both for each job and company you apply for.

Specifically ask for the human resource department, and personally hand over your stuff to someone who is in a position to run/influence the hiring process. It also helps that the hiring peeps get to see your face, which is invariably in your advantage if you are invited for an interview at a later stage.

Linkedin is Facebook for professionals. I myself make sure to add anyone I have intensive professional contacts with. If you consistently do this, you'll build a network that may bear fruit one day. So it doesn't work to just go to Linkedin while you don't have a network, and then expect to find job openings. But once you have a network of contacts, you can see where they work and what sort of job they're doing. You can then contact those persons you think are in relevant industries or functions and see if they can help you find a job opening in their organization or within their professional network. So the key to using Linkedin is to keep building your network throughout your professional career.

Nowadays job hunting is like a lot of other things: It can be done online.  Make a profile, apply to positions that are open and posted on the web.

Telemarketing positions or run an internet based business.  I've done both at home.
