what do you mean 'birth' your casing? do you mean take the cake out of the jar?Link ------------------ How I wish that somewhere there existed an island for those who are wise and of good will. -Albert Einstein

maybe he means that hes incubating the casing now, and birthing would be pinhead initiation.. I've used this terminology once or twice so it would be easier to understand.Hmm what i would do, is move the setup to your storage area.. dont worrk about the temp to much, you just need fresh air, light and humidity.. if you can work that out you'll be fine.. and yoru casing might be pinning by the time your relatives leave (dont be worried if it sisn't though). Good luck, vivid

well, it will be in my storage space with moderate, not a LOT of gas exchange, NO light, high humididty..95- 98% (perlite). Its cold, so i was hoping that would help trigger temporary dormancy. (BTW, i meant birthing as in lowering the temps to start pinning). BUT i was thinking. if i put the casing directily into the storage space for the next week and 1/2, that it would remain dormant the whole time, until my relatives leave. But im afraid of contam's as well as the casing completely dying. I can take care of it up until friday, but for probly 4-5 days i cant check on it. Or i could run the HIGH risk of having them find it. They are buying me new furniture so they will be going throughout the apartment.Any other ideas for a GOOD hiding place where even SNOPPY relatives wouldnt find it?

Its sort of a complicated situation. I live w/ one parent that NEVER EVER EVER come down to my room, so its no prob hiding my "shitakes". My other parent however (coming along w/ other relatives) is VERY nosy and often will do random searches through my room, bathroom, ect.. I honeslty do NOT know what to do. I REALLY appreciate everyones help!

I suggest you just leave your casing where you are comfortable with placing it. As long as it is not contaminated it'll stay pretty dormant or pin nicely. There is no element of maintenance if you want to stall on casings as long as they are healthy. The only possibility is that it might dry out.. but thats an opportunity cost and one that can be rectified.Maybe even take the casing outside, I mean you shouldn't get into growing if you can't guarantee that its not going to be detected but hey.. it happens to the best of us.
