Ingenuity in incubation?
    #14065112 - 03/04/11 08:38 AM (13 years, 2 days ago)

Just started my own mycology setup. I've had it a little rough when it comes to incubation though, I started out with an electric blanket, soon found that to be too hot. In desperation I slept with my twelve cultures for a couple nights; like a hen on her eggs. I have finally settled on using an xbox 360 in a small closet. It keeps the temp. right around 84*.  I also discovered what I suspect to be cinnamon mold in four of my jars. Other than a couple small hiccups I soon expect a fungus amoung us.

Oh, and fresh, coarsely ground whole wheat makes a wonderful brf replacement.

84F is way to hot. Jars of grain and BRF will colonize just fine at
room temperature(70-80F).

When you incubate at the temp you are now, as you have already found
contaminate spores that might not have germinated at 75F germinate at
84F.

The old 84-86F colonization temperature is long outdated information.

Oh, wow. Thanks! I'm using a textbook from 1973, it's not psylocybe specific.

Next batch I plan on doing brf(cheaper and easier), can I still incubate at room temp? And do I need to drop the temp at all to induce fruiting?

For cubes room temperature(70-80F) will do just fine for colonization
and fruiting.

You say next batch you will do BRF PF Tek...what are you doing now?

Also out of curiosity which mushroom book are you referencing?

I'm using home ground wheat, and Verm substrate; with mazatapec, African tranzkie, and treasure coast spores. The consistency isn't quite the same as brf.  I'm using the stamets guide to growing at home. 1983, once again, long night. I've kind of frankensteined my setup together from several different information sources.

Jeezus, you're reading some horribly outdated and inaccurate info.  You will find the brf tek helpful.  You're supposed to colonize your mushroom substrates and spawn at normal room temperature.

I'm halfway through my third week of incubation, with lots of rhizomorphic mycelial growth. All set backs aside, I'm very pleased with my first attempt, and I'm confident I will bear fruit. I'm new to this forum, how careful should one be as far as unwanted attention here?

I'm glad the gesture was thought humorous by someone else, my friends thought I had lost it.

Really? I guess I didn't get the memo either, I've been colonizing at 80 degrees F.

What's a number for room temperature though? Here in the Southwest we often keep our place at 78 to 80 anyway.

define "unwanted" like from  :cop2:? or just on here in general?

In general, be cool, respectful, try to stay on topic, don't flame/troll & we don't sell mushrooms/drugs here. We're here to share knowledge & information and, of course, to learn.

maybe your "red Cinnamon" is Lipstick from you making out w/ them while you slept w/ them  Just Playin' buddy. That's too funny though.

Room temp can be from 65-80...just remember your jars produce about 3 degrees of heat (Fahrenheit) themselves. I wouldn't recommend anything over 78.

yea, make sure it's only REALLY good friends that know

Google 'normal room temperature'. It's a defined range.

I've always heard 75* but semantics would dictate that: whatever the temperature of the room in question is; is indeed room temperature... It's all relative.

See if you can shake this term out of your head, Infinitely recursive self similarity. I for one can't get enough of it.

It seems to vary depending on what continent you're on... haha... In the U.K. it's 68, in the U.S. it's 72 some places and 78 others. What would be the ideal room temperature for P. Cubensis then? Are any of these better than the others?

anything below 80 is fine,, and 60 will colonize but a bit slower...so as long as your in that range your golden.
