Georgia Red Clay For Kanna?
    #14064932 - 03/04/11 07:17 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I have one kanna plant already but I have it in just normal potting soil mixed with mulch, I was not in my correct state of mind when I decided to do this... lol.

Anyways my question is how do you think kanna would do in the Georgia clay? I ask this because I have a huge spot of just the clay next to my yard and prickly pear cacti have been there all winter and are still ok, and they thrived when it was summer.

Maybe some clay mixed with some cacti soil? I only have maybe 6 kanna seeds left, which is why I haven't tested this idea yet... So is it worth a try?

I would not recommend using red clay for Kanna. From what I have read, they like their soil medium to dry in between waterings and all the recipies I am reading call for peat-based potting soil mixed with perlite and sand. Look at our clay in the Winter when we get most of our rain. It rains, freezes over, and turns into that nasty sludge that sticks to everything in huge clumps when you step in it. Clays, unless baked into hydroton or whatever the fuck those clay hydro pellets are called, are very water retentive when sufficiently hydrated.

EDIT: If you really don't want to spend money on desert sand (you can get 5 lb. bags of desert sand at my local Lowe's for $4.00 GA state tax included), use play sand cause it's way cheaper and I think it'll provide the drainage you need.

If it's silica sand, be careful not to breathe any dust in. A little probably won't do much, but it's better to stand on the side of caution. I used to work as a Geo-tech, between the drill going through quartz zones and pouring sand to build water wells, I learned to wear a mask all the time. One way you could avoid the dust is to mist some water into the bag, or work with it outside. Silica dust can't be blocked by standard surgical-type masks.
Like I said, it's not very much, but worth the effort IMO. Silica dust once in your lungs, cannot leave. Maybe a little will, but at least 99% of it will stay. Forever.

In ancient times, when demons roamed with man, They hunted, loved and lost, hand in hand, As time went on, the difference between them faded. You couldn't tell anymore, demons and man were related, and some would say the same, but who would like to claim? In time, Gods had even forgot, Demons, too, once love had sought. In times recent I remember, Once I was a man, In my heart I had an ember, I'll relate the best I can but it was snuffed, one distant December. And yet here I stand, no flesh, no bones, no seed or semen, All that's left is this Demon.
