I know it helps retain.. When I was thinking about and UTFSE to see what information is available on WBS/Coir jars, I came across some where people where using Coir as a major component of their jars a long with vermiculite.'
Now my question is, since coir can hold a decent amount of water by itself, is the verm neccesary then? I was thinking maybe it also plays a role in preventing the cakes from getting to compacted in which case coulnt one just thrw some perlite into the coir/wbs mix?? Or do you think the WBS/coir mix wooul be fine as is??
Anyone ever try coir/wbs jars?

i believe it would be pointless unless you wanted to fruit out of the jars, but im sure it would work fine if that's what you wanna do.

Using coir as a replacement for verm in jar culture, whether with brf, wbs, rye flour, etc., is underwhelming. The vermiculite supplies minerals not found in coir. RR

I use coir as a bulk substrate, mixing spawn from the colonized myc. in the WBS jars with a coir/verm mix into a monotub. I am not aware of anyone mixing coir with the WBS together in jars to colonize... is this what you are asking?
it sounds like you are combining the pf-tek brf jars with a separate method of jar prep. No one makes 'cakes' from WBS or coir that I know of...
and in answer to the "what is the purpose of verm?"... It seems that has already been answered, but as I understand it... verm retains moisture better than coir, releasing it slowly over time. It also adds texture to the coir. Plus, verm is mostly non-nutritious(except for minerals, thanks RR) while coir has enough nutrients to be considered a bulk sub. Verm is just added for texture and moisture retention, possibly other factors here
hope this helps, even though I am still slightly confused what you are asking

there are a few members that grind WBS and makes cakes out of it...they claim decent results i wouldn't do it myself but hey to each his own
