prison psychology

based on the results of the classic stanford prison experiment, how would you view the functionality and application of our current penal system? does roleplaying delude the individual into adopting or forfeiting a conditional purpose? how might such a superiority complex relate to the relationship between the government and the governed?

imo, our prison system degrades the prisoners. it treats them like society's trash. how could such a condition affect their overall outlook on themselves and their lives?

all in all, does our penal system even work?

i think a watered down version of the "prison" mentality is apparent in modern society, which is the point i wanted to make. our beliefs in freedom are a bit illusory.

I wish people would simply acknowledge that death is a better fate than 7+ years in prison and act accordingly if they are going to get sent there for that long.

In my opinion Physical life is useless if there is no quality of your life! Why do people fear death so much that they would turn themselves in and live a pointless life, instead of taking the opportunity to die fighting for what they believe in?

They've all got a huge bias, the old guy sounds scripted.
Worst of all, Mr. Oldguy didn't stop the shit.

Lady is the only one with it... and "the NEXT day he ends the experiment."  What an asshole.
Prisons are supposed to be about rehabilitation.

How could you, or anybody else know if death is a better fate than 7+ years in prison? :undecided:

The rehabilitation philosophy went out the door about 20 years ago. Incarceration is strictly about punishment today. "Tough on crime" gets votes, just look at Sheriff Joe. The people want it, the politicians deliver, and nobody cares about the collateral consequences because it's not something the average person has much, if any, personal experience with.

Whether or not it "works" depends on the purpose you ascribe to it. Does it keep murders and rapists out of the community? Sure. Does it provide anything positive to those it contains? Hell no. Sitting in a cell for 23 hours a day and being immersed in prison culture is hardly a recipe for success. Prison should be used only when somebody poses a true threat to the safety of others or their property. It should not be used as a catch-all form of justice.

I agree with you dude.

I actually just read an interesting article in Time Magazine about the Indonesian anti-terrorism forces.

Their main objective is to capture terrorist/extremists alive so that they can rehabilitate them and then use information from them to capture more terrorists.

So they actually resort to some very interesting methods such as supporting the terrorist's family while he is incarcerated, allowing him to converse with Islamic scholars on the teachings of the Koran (this is to help him see the Koran in full context other than just looking at it from perspective of jihad).

Basically they treat the terrorist like a human being and show him compassion and respect. I think the quote was something like "good men gone astray".

They find the techniques to be much more effective than just locking them up in a Guantanamo Bay-type facility.
