http://www.winrumors.com/man-upgrades-windows-1-0-to-windows-7-via-every-other-windows-versions/
It's pretty sweet, it was posted yesterday on a blog. I hate windows with a passion, but only after using it for over 10 years. I began using it at the last stages of 3.1 which sparked my interest at a young age, all the way to XP which was the last copy of Windows I owned. So watching the video was definitely pretty cool and brought back some memories. I can remember a lot of pain in my upgrades though, not nearly as smooth as the guy in the video. I can't even recount the amount of hours I have spent tweaking jumpers, finding drivers, and changing bios settings and anything else I could try, all without high speed internet...lol, the times change. It is pretty fascinating how they kept building layer upon layer. Also, some interesting color schemes.
It's these reason alone I choose not use Windows. For some it's a feature, others a burden. To say windows isn't riding on a ton of legacy momentum would be far from the truth as the video shows.
Still with all the flaws of Windows, it's served its purpose well and has had unparalleled success and should be commended.
(I didn't make to become a Windows vs. anything thread. Just to shed some light on a video I enjoyed.)

'twatface', hilarious
Hahahaaaa....takes you back! Man, I spent a lot of time installing various versions of Windows on various new and old machines. I remember when 2k became available it was a huge improvement over anything we'd had before. Especially the horrible episode of 98 and Me, which both suffered from dramatic performance, security and hardware support issues. I could get just about any sort of hardware to work on 98 or Me, but you never knew how long it would last. The NT-based 2K for the first time combines the ruggedness of NT4 with a UI that was still inherited from NT, but somehow had the slickness and user friendliness of the 9x/Me series. And from that moment, we never really advanced anymore. XP, Vista and 7 apparently only served to make the UI appealing to users, but the consistency and ruggedness of 2K was victimized for that purpose. In my opinion, MS should have simply stopped introducing new versions after 2K and put its efforts into maintaining that version. The architecture was solid and flexible enough to allow for all the hardware and network innovations over the past 10 years.
Thanks for posting that link, I enjoyed it too. Let's hope this doesn't turn into a 'Mac was already way better in 198x than Windows' vs. '...but they never got the market share M$ did'. That'd be a shame. This is just about our collective memory and experience of day-to-day office work and digital entertainment.

I retrospect, Microsoft is trying to kill one of it's notorious products...

I wonder what boot times were like in Win 7. That was an awesome video for sure, and I was amazed that relics from 20 year old installs still existed at the end. It almost brought a tear to my eye seeing 3.0 because about 15 years ago today I had a snow day in High School and remember sitting on the sun porch where I had my Gateway PC (I had a potbelly woodburning stove to keep me warm) and I spent about 3 hours in paintbrush drawing a Marlboro Reds box pixel by pixel to make my wallpaper.
My Dad doesn't own the house anymore but the whole room was encircled in tall windows that looked out into our tiny apple orchard that had 3 rows of 20 apple trees. Lining the edge of the property along the road were tall evergreen trees that were completely weighted down with snow, much like it is this very moment. Fuck I miss that house and the country.
Direct-link Doom II deathmatch ftw.
