i know exactly how you feel, i have also experienced this reaction to all the lies that i believed as a kid. try not to hate and attach any emotion with your judgment of the situation that we as the human family find ourselves in at this point. hating will just get you down and make you angry.

Religion was a great tool when there were no laws, and life was very grim. It gave people a reason to work towards a better civilization. But now, religion is useless considering we have laws and material things to pull and direct us towards this goal.

laws and material thangs are just as valid as any religion
it's just a different way to live. a different form of experience to live by. i believe all religions have a genuine basis of truth to it, which lays at the core of every religion. but the way people interpret these things varies..
the subtler the message, the truer it is. with every attempted explanation it diverges further from the truth, as things are interpreted subjectively so the more words there are surrounding a certain idea, the greater variety of ways it can be interpreted by different people. with every interpretation the message strays further and further from the core truth
peace/unity/oneness.. this is the soul basis of all religion

thats true, i wonder if society will ever let religon go? maybe if some kind of ultimate universal truth was experienced by every single individual, like if we somehow discovered what is beyond the grave.

Religion served its purpose in the past, but we don’t need it in this day and age.
When I look at how each village and town has its church and when I think what life must have been like long ago, I can easily imagine that the church was just about all they had after their six days of toil in the fields or down the mines.
Religion must have been like the Internet or the telly or the local library or the theater. It was the source of information and entertainment and the vicar told you how to live your life. It gave people a reason to carry on with the drudgery of life just believing paradise awaited them.
As far as I can make out it was an individual creating every religion from Christ (who might have been a mushroom!!!) to Mohammed to Zoroaster and they’re all the same because they offer a bargain. What the bargain amounts to is “do what I say, live like I tell you and you will be in paradise when you die”.
What a con this is? The con artist religion inventor achieved a sort of cheating of death himself by virtue of fact that people followed his word believing in him and keeping his idea alive for even thousands of years after the inventor had died. And every one of these gullible folk who believed the shit died and not a single one ended up in paradise, not even the inventor himself.
Religion is just a strategy to cheat death. Nobody’s got proof the strategy works, yet most of humanity BELIEVE in it, how absurd is that???

fairy tale land exists It's called your imagination, and you can inhabit it in many awesome ways.
I think religion is a great thing and totally fascinating. It's not religion that's behind the evils of the world, its a concsiousness that's based only in the drives of survival, sex, and power. Through religion and spirituality it's possible to move up and learn to operate from drives of compassion and contemplation and creativity (of course many people do this without something they call spirituality, but spirituality is an organized systematic way to do this).
Don't let fucked up power mongers claim religion. The attitude many in this thread have is exactly the one they want you to have, because it creates a divide that they can leverage in their stupid followers. But though many religions like the catholic church have gotten fucked up, they were all born from legitimate events that were good things for the world.

@RP religion hasnt destroyed our society, traditional theology & human ignorance have done that.
its natural for humans to beleive in god, it is even being shown now that there is specific part of the brain responsibly for the "divine" feeling commonly felt by all religions, the part of the brain developed to ease the stress of the iminent fear of death. We had to feel something was "eternal" to ease the massive stress buildup that occurs when we ponder death.
So when people have an experience with "god", it is very "real". something is occuring in thier brain that makes them feel a higher power or plane of existence, and it is wrong to condemn man as a whole for trying to explain this "divine" feeling in various ways, i.e all of the different religions of ttoday, what is wrong is when beleifs are shoved down people's throats and the whole "power and money" tthing got involved in the spiritual relm.

Some people need religion to make sense of things. I personally could never adhere to a religion but I've taken a lot away from Hinduism and Buddhism.

Why?

maybe it would encourage people to work together if they know the true nature of their existence.

Work together in order to accomplish what? What is the true nature of our existence?
