You would think that religions would update their shit every once in a while. Like how the earth wasn't the first thing in the universe and other stupid shit like that. Their losin alot of customers, at least the younger generation. The older generations will be there till they die though, but I think religion will disappear with them. So it's just a matter of waiting.

We could be fucking alien women by now if it werent for the christian dark ages.
Yep... without the power of the Bible to confound the intellect and lead clear-thinking men astray, the industrial revolution would have occurred by 400 AD.

Back in the 60's, the Catholic church did try to modernize with Vatican II. Unfortunately, there was a big backlash against that movement that's propped up assholes like the current pope. There's also a more current modernizing force among Evangelicals. It's called the Emerging Church movement.
I'd suggest checking out Shane Claiborne. The world would be a much better place if more Christians followed his example.

um that is entirely subjective to western civilization. i regret to inform you that that is less than half the world based on population.

Well, I'm responding to OP, and being that OP is speaking English to a largely English-speaking audience, I felt compelled to reply according to the assumptions inherent to western connotations of religion.
My only real point is that people always carry out their duties in the name of something transcendental, whether it's Shiva, Jehovah, Justice, etc.

yes this is true. i feel we humans fear the unknown to the point that it forces us to seek constant justification. alas, what is justice but a figment of our speculative imaginations?

I think it's because duties are functions that we perform not in the interest of our own immediate survival or happiness, but in the interest of someone else. We have to imagine that we do this kind of work for something else, incorporeal and higher than us, immortal, to feel rewarded by that kind of work.

Yeah, but what are "you"? There are several different aspects of your personality, bodily presence, life, etc. I could be referring to just by saying "you." Many philosophers would argue that the concept of "you," as an entity discrete in any meaningful way from the surrounding environment, is an illusion.
(Have you ever noticed that the capital letter I looks like a pillar standing in the middle of a bunch of gobbledygook? Like a pillar that could support the weight of the very sky itself?)
We also like to talk about groups of people as though they were individuals. America's doing this, Oregon's doing that, France is opposed to so and so. Have you ever read Genesis? It's fucking indecipherable because it discusses families and tribes in this way without explanation. Why no explanation? The rabbis figured they didn't need to mention something so obvious.
The problems we like to scapegoat religion with are far closer to home than any of us want to acknowledge.
And I'm sorry if that was a weird post but I am

well i was mainly thinking about school and work. i like school because it gives me the opportunity to learn interesting things. and i "like" work because it allows me to buy useless things and dance with strippers and get drunk and smoke weed and stuff.

I like these things for the same reasons.
My point though is that you go through these things which are not immediately physically gratifying - you sacrifice your immediate pleasure, and I italicize for good reason - for the sake of gnosis, and also for the You who experiences wild reveries at the edges of consciousness.
