Planning on camping the lost coast this summer. Anyone ever been to Usal Beach? It's the only drive in campground in the state park. It's hard to find info on but as far as I know its first come first served camping? Anyone know how much it costs? I hear it can get busy on summer weekends so I'm planning on leaving work early on a Thursday to get a spot .
Also, anyone have any comparison with King's Range National Conservation Area (the other part of the lost coast)?
For anyone who doesn't know, the lost coast is one of the must untouched places in California. No highways lead to it, you have to take backroads of Hwy 101.

In the last picture, I can imagine myself creeping along that untouched coast and scrambling around that first bend to the other side, giddy with adventure.
Have fun!

I am more familiar with the King Range section of the lost coast section. if you know leave no trace style camping, then just pick up a wilderness permit and you won't be confined to the campgrounds. They require bear proof food canisters also, can be rented at BLM office. Also when hiking the beaches in this area it is important to be aware of the tides. They can fluctuate as much as 9-10 ft., some beach sections being inaccessible at high tide.
Its a truly wild area, be ready for anything out there. You'll have the time of your life. Feel free to shoot a PM if you got some specific questions..

Thanks man!
I would totally be down with just heading off in the wilderness, and probably will with my buds at our end of the summer backpacking excursion. This trip however, I'm taking my fiancee and she isn't too keen on "letting loose" in the wilderness . After doing some more research I'm now considering the Mattole Beach Campground at the north end of the King Range NCA, its cheaper and has potable water.

Lost Coast is epic. That's really all I've got to add. Oh, and the thing about bears is no joke.
