Use 60-66F for colonizing large substrates such as 5 quart bags of grain or large bulk substrates.
BRF cakes are more tolerant to the middle range of colonization temperatures than larger grain substrates. You could safely heat the spawning area up to 70-75F to increase colonization speed with little to no risk of causing contamination.

place them above your fridge, it generates some heat
or you can place in a styrofoam with a warm jar of water...and heat the jar of water as needed...

would hanging a reflector lamp above the shoe box the jars are in be a SAFE idea? also if i do use the lamp, should it be on a timer?

im wondering this same thing. if it would provide enough heat or not. i actually just signed up here to ask this. i only need a slight raise in temp for optimal conditions for my incubation station. im thinking it would work somewhat, just have to keep a safe distance between the chamber and the light and keep a close eye on the temp.

I am dealing with this exact situation in my house. It is Winter, around 40 outside and about 60 in my old, radiator heated domicile.
Putting the box up high will help because it is probably five degrees warmer near your ceiling because heat rises. I personally just drape some lit christmas tree lights on my incubating shoebox. This helps with a few degrees and is a good choice because you wont need a timer.
Within days I've had kickass colonization in my 60ish degree house keeping my fungus at 76ish.
Good luck man.

Best, safest, most reliable jar warming method I've found: put them in a styrofoam cooler with a jar of warm water. You can zap the water once a day or as needed. Maintain temps no higher than about 75-78F for best results.
Zero danger of overheating or catching fire while providing gentle warmth for germination.

Ive always put my jars inside a rubbermade container on one side and put a heating pad under the other side of the container. Seemed to work really good for me.

I see that alot of people on here now are sayin temps on the 70s. Im just now getting back into this but when i did it before i always kept mine in the low to mid 80s and the jars col. really fast. yours may grow at that temp but prolly pretty slow.

Old spores will definitely be finicky about germinating. Get laboratory grade rattle snake venom to crack the stubborn exterior cellular wall of the aged spores to get them to germinate or, visit the Marketplace or order new genetics from a known and trusted vendor.

Keep us updated and let us know how colonization goes in the higher temp. I'm curious as well, because I'm waiting for mine to germinate, and the house is only around 69 degrees.

well, i don't own any rattle snakes or i would try the venom thing, today is day six, i am going to give these little guys another week or two before i start over, i have faith in B+
although i did impulsively buy more spores yesterday! i am so stoked to noc up more jars,
if any one has any experience with (orisa india) i would love to have some feedback, from what i understand they produce some large caps,
i only have the equipment for BRF cakes but i plan on spawning the BRF cakes to a mono tub for the the orisa
if Ne one cares i gathered up Treasure Coast *Personal Fav.!! Cambodian and Honduras

I'm by no means experienced, but I do a lot of research and intend to think rationally regardless... IMO just leave them be... you have nothing to lose by giving them longer than "normal" germination times. I mean, something like a month+ after inoculation is reasonable to question, but trashing them after 13 days seems, well, impatient.
from all my research, patience is one of the highest priorities when cultivating mushies.
good luck! I hope it works out!
