Mold spores germinating in coco-coir
    #14060368 - 03/03/11 02:14 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I started finging plant sprouts growing in my monotubs after the spawn run, and i wondered were the hell they were comin from so i did an experiment.

I hydrated some core and left it for two weeks in a tub with no spawn mixed..i found the same spouts.

So the sprouts come from the coir. I'm assuming they originate from seeds in the coir.

As we all know, mold spores don't really germinate on coco-coir that well, so for coir growers like myself when a tub goes south off the get go the culprit i like to point my finger at is dirty spawn.

Until i found these sprouts.

Assuming they originate from seeds in the coir isn't it safe to say they would be a germinating point for mold spores in pasturized coir?

The seeds themselves aren't really that big a deal, but the fact that they are viable is an indicator that the coir is nowhere near clean enough to use as-is.

A lot of folks are under the impression that coir is generally sterile enough to use right out of the bag.  Personally I am not among this collective.  I have done the same experiment with several types of coir and had plants, all colors of mold and a couple bacterial stench piles for results.

Now, I always pasteurize coir and pH balance it with hydrated lime.  Since doing so, I have not had a failure, even with spawn that was more than questionable.
