And I couldn't be happier.

Sporeworks Blue oyster run

cold soaked for about 16 hrs.
simmered for allotted time, steam dried and loaded this morning.
The first 40 just came up to pressure and 80 jars to go after that.

This blue oyster certainly is not aggressive as aloha's strain(which I just got in from Evil, thanks bro :awethumb:

but it is what I have to expand, and I have seen some nice results from Buckeye oysters with this strain.

The timing couldn't be better as the grow room is now up to par, and the weather will be letting up right around the time these are ready to fruit.

Also the extra time  from the semi failure of the pinks has given me a little more time to get organized and get people interested in the idea.

I had no slots left for extra pasteurizers, so I upgraded my breaker boxes to have more space. That just got final inspection and is good to go. I can now run three pasteurizers if I so choose.:crazy2:

And because it seemed to interest a few of you, here are a couple of more screen shots of some of the setting up I have done.
The numbers on the materials are a little off cause we have found better deals on things, changed the substrate and so on, and there are yet some things that I will organize better, but you'll get the idea.

Very nice setup.  Wish I could afford something like that.

I think your wall needs a new coat of paint.

Thanks for the support everyone, I think this grow will turn out to be something special in my list of pivital moments in life for the next few years hopefully.

How in the hell did I miss what was going on here!!!
This going to be an kick-ass thread with all the info posted!!! You need a 6 burner stove to do all that grain at once.

So you have the fruiting chamber all tweaked and ready to go? So what do you have in your chamber right now? I can't wait to see all those straw log with mushrooms going out of them!!!
Thanks for posting Ozzy's got the Blues!

Welcome aboard Pepper.

Yup the grow room is working nice, nothing in it yet though for prolly 2 more weeks. The next run is going to be on cottonseed hulls,(not sure if I will be supplementing yet)

I am debating picking up another stove and a couple more pc's. I think space wise it would still be eaiser/cheaper than investing in a RR style steam setup at this point. It isn't on the top of my list yet.

when the electrical inspector came in he looked at the breaker box and was like "pasteurzer? whats that? what is it used for? when I told him he didn't look to happy, but I explained it to him and offered to let him go through the house for evidence of anything illegal, and eventualy he dropped it. Even took somewhat of an intrest in the process. I hate inspectors!! Always mucking things up in the first place around my neck of the woods and generally wasting everyones time with no shows and what not.

The stove I picked up for 100 bucks at a resale shop + 320 for 4 more pc's  + 30 for gas pipe. so 470 to save a few more hours. 80 at once would be nice.

The first round with the Pinks running 4 pc's at once was pretty good. I did come back to them on one run and 2 of the pc's were only at 12 psi, and sure enough those jars contaminated.

This round I waited 10 more minutes to make sure that they were staying up to par and everything went smoothly.

Wasnt' to bad though, I ran 120 jars yesterday, so the final rinse, simmer, dry, load changed a bunch of filters, cleaned the workspace, cut up replacement foil lids for some.... in about 5 hours without breaking stride. pc'ed the last 40 this morning and inoculated the first 80 from yesterday.

I  need to switch to bags, but I really F#*ked em up the last time I tried. I keep feeling like there is alot riding on getting this going good soon, and can't convince myself to pull the trigger on trying them again at this point. It just feels like the timing/spawn supply is never right to take the risk.:frown:

As you are looking at a commercial operation, have you considered just buying your spawn in? Add up those hours, expense and space and it might make sense. Shipping cost plays a big part but for example in Europe I can buy high grade commercial grain spawn for less than 1$/Quart.

I have not considered it. I think the scale that you are looking to do is much larger than what I am shooting for out of the gate.

and while it's a pain in the ass at the moment to run/wash/prep all these jars, it still beats (at this scale) paying the extra cost for bags and additionally spawn.

I don't mind cranking up the tunes and putting in the hard work it takes to manage all of this. It is what makes me better at the  process of getting bigger. Kindalike paying dues. When I am absolutely fed up with washing jars,I will switch to bags, another hurdle, but once I do it, nobody can take that knowledge and experience away from me.
I Would be cheated out of the experience if I just bought premade bags.

If I were running a 1000 pounds a week , I would consider it, but as it stands I am working on getting it to 140lbs a week, which is easily manageable by just me.
For 1600 dollars in estimated product, I have the process down to somewhere around 30 hours of actual hands on work. Once I have everything I want in place, I am shooting to get it done in 20.

That not too bad of a turnaround for a small investment of time and a few hundred dollars a week.

2 people
160 bucks for materials
1600-160=1540
1540/2= 770 apiece
take out delivery/electricity/insurance/a phone line for the biz/
puts it in the 600 dollar a week category per person
at 30 hours of time investment, you are getting paid 20 dollars an hour.
at 20 hours it is 30 bucks an hour.

then add that the buisness has to pay me back for the setup.

I figure when it's all said and done, phase 1 will have cost me 3700 bucks to setup(I am at 2500 now)
So once it gets rolling, 100 from me and 100 from my partner a week  will pay back the the biz.
(which will bring us down to 500 a week pay wise)
It will have paid for itself in around 19 weeks.

Sooooo..... for the first 4 months, it will be rough, but manageable.

ATM these are guestimates as I have not hit that mark yet, but you get the idea.

I am alright with an extra paycheck for weekend work.:awethumb:

The goal from the get go on this was not to make it rich, but to build up a biz that pays for itself, makes me better at mycology(more to work with/experiment)  and gives me a little cash to have some fun with.

If I am able to get above that mark, then it's just a bonus with the choice to move ahead with this.

Wow you really got everything figured out.

I'm loving the spread sheets with hours/expenses I will really need to do the exact same thing when I get the ball rolling on my project.

Unfortunately I hardly have room in my current house, my spare room is being taken up with bales of straw, other supplies, my 75x, shelving unit, and table to do work on.

Today I will be going to get another shelving unit sine my current one is full of spawn bags of king oyster now.

I will be moving in April to a place with more space so I will have a room dedicated to growing.

I've had great luck with samsclub, I figured I would recommend this stuff since it has helped me greatly:

This shelving unit holds 72 large spawn bags (12 per shelf), I think it would work great for holding straw longs horizontally too:

If you have a 75X this rolling cart works great for it and can hold 500lbs and even has storage underneath for jars/supplies:

Also this stainless steel table is pretty cheap and is at a nice high level to stand and work on:

I plan to get another one when I get the money for a 4' 2' flowhood since it will fit perfect on it since it's 49".

One of these days when I have something to show I will make a thread, currently all I got is a messy room with straw everywhere, half colonized king oyster bags, no fruits to show and an angry girlfriend for me spending all this money on my new hobby

Thanks Doc, I am trying use this thread as a research tool for others who want to give this a shot on the small scale. When I went decided on my pinks run to make a go at this, there were some good threads about the process, but no numbers on what it actually takes.
I will be updating my spreadsheets soon towards that goal, but it's pretty busy with the run, and it's my birthday weekend as well, so I have dinner plans with family as well as a small rave being thrown for me by some friends...so Im gonna be wreaked for a few days..lol

Also If anyone wants to add their angles on profiting from mycology, I would not be opposed to you throwing up in the mix and discussing the pros and cons of it.

here's one I thought of yesterday while making jars.

It sucks prepping jars.....
why not run an ad in the paper, for teaching people how to grow mushrooms, they come clean rye, wash jars, inoculate and what not.
they get to take home a few pounds of spawn and sub for the effort
I get cash to pay for materials doing what I would be doing on that day anyway, and have my work load reduced.

thoughts?..........

I love to prep jars, but I hate bulk spawning.
I'd make jars for you by the case- you give me empties, I give you full ones.

:ahahaha: shipping would be outrageous!

I like the shelf mycoman, the small cart would not roll well on my basement floor.
My ol' lady(11 years:thumbup:) hasn't said much about the biz.

I tend to make somthing successful and then move on to a new challenge in life, she saw it with the bar,  and a couple of other "endevors" I have been involved with.So she trusts that I will either do it or find something else that pays for the extra's in life. Funny though, she goes apeshit if I drink her last pepsi

suicidal tendencies a must listen
Evil!..I know your gonna see this link,  I think you'll love it, go to isohunt and rip the "primal cuts" album by them

on my wants list.....

I used  to have one that I got when we closed the bar down, but the motor fried on it. Would make washing a few hundred jars a breeze

Ha! That's funny I just finished the write up in my journal about working out the numbers - in the example I used coincidentaly it came to 142lbs /week! (see sig)

Just one thing though in your workings you talked about $1600/4 weeks,If I am not mistaken the life cycle (grain to cash) is about 10-12 weeks so wouldnt your one batch yield $160/week?

... But have to say that is an awesome spawn producing set up!

the 140 lbs per week is the spawn lbs. number, I am gonna shoot for 160 lbs in product.
between 8-10 dollars a lb.

Lets say it's 4 servings per pound. So a 10 lb minimum order from a resturaunt would serve 40 people.

So I want to find a resturaunt big enough to handle at least that to expect not to have to make deliveries every day.

I am pitching the idea that they use my product on a in a special of the house plate once a week. Many of the cooks I have talked to said If I can deliver nice looking quaility mushrooms that I am thinking to small with this idea and that they would be looking for more than 10lbs a week.

That being said, 10lbs wouldn't be a big hit for them, and that it all comes down to me showing up with mushrooms in hand to make the deal happen.:awedance:.

So at that rate with one  night, they spend 10lbs @ $10.00= $100 and get at least double that back in profits from their servings. That's my take on it from talking with a few resturant managers.

It's 1600 per batch per week, so it's not divided by 4. But I see where you are going with that. I am not including the pilot runs/ramp up into those numbers into that scenario, my numbers are based on having everything set up turning over weekly. so the monthly income for the biz would be 6400 .And yeah it will take about that long to get the weekly cycle into place. But once there it should be smooth sailing with the system down.

If that doesn't sound right with your numbers in your scenario, I would love to hear your take on it. I'm gonna chek your journal when I'm done typing.

Right now I am starting with a biweekly cycle and will be ramping up once I get it to work well.
