Yes, they're OK, but pick off any rotten ones when you strip the bags off. From the tiny corner of the filter patch shown in one picture, it looks like the M style filter which is a major cause of that problem.
You'll also often see some green mold on the caps of the fruits near the top. The M filter lets the trich spores get through, and if the mushrooms on the top get over ripe, the trich will germinate on the caps. RR

T filters have vertical lines from top to bottom. M filters have a diamond pattern. RR

Weird, when I bought my bags, I bought some of each. They must have mislabeled them. I was sure that I used the T filters for the shiitake for that very reason. Oh well, I'll just have to hope for the best.
Thanks again.

Still sitting on my shelf. I'm full up at the moment. I need a gh when I can afford a way to run it.
I got my 110L sg two story tight now with cubes.

Try not to let them fruit invitro to the point of maturity. If you do, the fruits will form mold on top and the block is ruined.
I have a theory that there is a 'trichoderma-like' mold which is an anamorph of shiitake and will spontaneously appear as the fruits start to decompose. I've seen this happen too many times for it to be chance, and it happens even in the T filter bags with .2 micron filters, and it happens in nearly 100% of them.
I'm waiting on DNA test results from cultures I've sent in. RR

So RR your saying that my in vitro fruits in my bags from months ago have probably made my bags mold inside?
I'm not really planning on getting anything out of them since I used 5.m instead of .2m filters.
Oldest ones are nearly 5 months old now.

how do you tell the difference between the two types of filter?
Which is the best for shiitake?

5.0 have squares, the 0.2 have lines.
0.2 is ideal for shiitake.

I spoke with Dr. John Holliday about this and he believes there is a problem with the filters on the unicorn bags which tend to distort under the heat from autoclaving. He's never seen conidial mycelium as an anamorph of shiitake. Neither have I prior to this, but it seemed to make sense.
I'll go with his advice and try the bags from mycelia on my next order. RR

I think I have a few of both, next time I check.
Talking about massive invitro's, i just unpeeled this block i forgot about 2 month old, straw/sawdust/bran/gypsum. Insane, a few had rotted i ate the big one.
Got nowhere too put em,so 3 blocks are sitting outside in my new GH just chill'in untill the weather warmes up.

NO more woodchips for me, these blocks look and smell good, all my WC blocks contams out.
Eheh it's my birthday today and my 1st successful shiitake flush abliet invitro.

Great info there RR. I was curious when you mentioned the possibility of an anamorph. Good advice for filter patch bags as well. Need to pick up some more soon and that helped me make my decision.
