For Profit Education
    #14055460 - 03/02/11 04:01 PM (13 years, 3 days ago)

Did anyone watch Frontline last night (or maybe when it aired originally some time ago) about well "For Profit Education" or else these new colleges like University of Phoenix, Devry, Grand Canyon University, etc. etc. that are publicly traded stocks and wholesale education?

It was a pretty good show and interesting.

For example:  tuition rates for these for profit schools aer 4-5 times higher than community colleges and even more expensive than most state schools.  They also are responsible for nearly half of all federal loan money currently granted.  They have super-aggressive recruitment programs and often recruit students on false pretenses and a lot of times the kids that graduate from these programs can't find gainful employment afterwards.

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge with these schools?

Why would you go to a for profit university when you could go to community college or a 4 year state school?

Well, they have lower standards.  In fact I don't think they have any.  Plus the schools can be completely financed on federal loans.

Because they're idiots. There really is no other explanation.

I know when I was a hiring manager that we considered online school degrees to be less valuable than a 4 year, so it seems like a waste to me.

I also know several people who graduated from the Le Cordon Bleu culinary academy near the top of their class and only managed to get jobs at cafeterias and run-of-the-mill restaurants, but I don't know if that's one of the "for profit" schools you're talking about. Lot of debt for no return, IMO.

To me, the value in education is the knowledge base that comes from a variety of courses. There's a strong correlation between education and happiness.

I tried to stay out of the thread since I don't have experience with for profit schools.

But community colleges have no standards either. You can get in there with horrible grades-- no grades-- it doesn't matter.
And they're usually inexpensive. A couple hundred bucks a semester for me to take a full load.

I went to ITT Tech, twice.  Biggest mistakes of my life.  I'd be a much better person today had I just trusted my instincts and studied on my own, vs going to a school run by Chinese, non English speaking immigrants that handed out tutorials printed from free websites and were told to teach ourselves...

:kingcrankey:  I'd love to level that place.

I'm pretty biased since my community college ranks very highly on a national comparison, but I don't think that's a fair comparison considering that most community colleges won't let you get a 4 year degree, just an associates. I also can't wait to transfer to UT next year but community college has saved me $20k in debt, easily, and allowed me to build a badass GPA to replace my 7 year old high school transcript. Some of the classes might be poorly taught but for the most part they're only core classes that act as a high-school refresher before you get to the serious shit.

I think it's fucking crazy to go straight into a 4 year university unless you're from a well-to-do family or on a full scholarship. Debt is the enemy of the middle-class, the lid to the rat cage, fuck that mess.
