Hi -
There will be an advanced mushroom microscopy workshop at Noisebridge this Friday.
Time: Friday 3/4, 7pm - 7am. Show up late if you want. Leave early if you want.
I have a few microscopes, but if you have one, bring it. Also bring a camera, preferably a small one which will work well taking photos through the microscope.
This will be a hands on workshop with a goal - I have been given dozens of dried samples, all labeled with the MO observation number. We will be making micrographs of all of these samples to post on MO along with the observations.
Cost: $3 donation requested, no one turned away for lack of funds.
Location: 2169 mission, san francisco. http://noisebridge.net

Might look and see if NC has a mycological society. Oregon's is doing a microscopy workshop mid March I think. Hopefully I wont be too busy to get there.

There are a few Mushroom Clubs in NC but a bit of a drive for me. It wouldn't be a problem if I wasn't unemployed...

If you want it to happen in NC you should do it. No one else will.
Not many people make events like this in CA either. As far as I know this is the first all night microscope party that anyone in the mycological community has created. Not the last one though. I will throw a microscope party every night if there is demand.
I made this event because someone gave me some samples to do microscopy on. Not just a few samples, I think he gave me his whole herbarium. There is no way I could do that work by myself, and I would like to teach others how to do this kind of stuff. The last advanced microscopy workshop focused on teaching people how to use microscopes to ID mushrooms, this one will be 100% hands on work.
Attendees should bring coffee, food and beer or whatever it is that they are into. There is a nice kitchen to cook food in, cool hackers to hang out with if you need a break from the microscope, and a laser cutter! Also a fully stocked electronics area with oscilloscopes and a spectrum analyzer, a sewing area, a scanning electron microscope, and much more. There will be tv-b-gone kits available for $20. If anyone wants to build one I will teach you how to solder.

I need a lot more experience to be able to teach folks microscopy. I've only had a microscope for a little over two months. Maybe in the future...
Seems like you know how to throw a party, Alan. Sounds like a fun time!

I wish I knew even a little bit about Microscopy, otherwise I'd head over there right now.
I'll try to come by possible future ones that are geared towards beginners.
Sounds great though.
