damn that sounds like a good idea! where i live we have about 6 cows. only 3 eat grain though the rest eat hay that we cut and bail our self. i think im going to try to feed them some spores. only spores i have right now are orissa's though. not really sure on the climate they grow in though. don't really think anything grows around here other then liberty bells but what the hell! i'm going to try it! i don't think drowning a carrot is the way to go though... that's kind of a one shot thing. i say stick a little on a carrot every day and spread out the love a little bit. i live in kansas city kansas and our weather changes so much it's hard to call. i know alot of mushrooms grow around here cause i have went out and picked them and looked them up to see what they are when i started doing this. a guy a know dumps wood chips from a tree service he owns a couple property's over and i been thinking about going and getting a bunch and trying to grow some wood lovers on them. so many mushrooms grow out of them wood chips it'n unbelievable! point is... i think you might be on to something. i wish you would try it and finish up this post and let us all know what happened.... if you don't then ill try it and ill let everyone know what happens... the same guy with the wood chips has some horses... i might try cows and horses and see what happens. i read here that cow and horse stomach acid ain't strong enough to destroy the spores. so i think it might work. other then moisture being off a bit.... however... orissa's or african's was found in elephant shit... which also has alot more oisture then recommend. ill post after im done!

claims of it working with cows...
Well, seeing as they only naturally occur on cow (and buffalo and elephant) dung one would think this was to be expected, no? There is a reason why nature does things the way it does.

Psilocybe cubensis will neither grow in Kansas nor on horse dung (at least not in a natural environment).

yeah i saw the part about nature..but my line of thinking is, if it wont grow on it in nature why would it be that good for indoor..i mean, seems cow would be better giving the wild results..
sorry I am dumb when it comes to manure, never used it i've always used just coir, or straw, or mixture of the two..

Cubes won't naturally grow in coir or straw, either. I think it has more to do with the germination of the spores, because on all these substrates you can grow cubes if you have colonized spawn to mix in.

ok that clears it up a bit more for me, thanks...i just didn't want to spawn to horse manure if cow manure would be better, i actually have way more access to cow over horse..

For indoor cubensis cultivation, horse manure is the best bulk substrate material, under the sun, due to it's readiness, enrichment of the perfect balance of nutrition for cubesis mycelium, and texture, to use straight from it's source. Cow manure is nothing to sneeze at, however. Cubensis mycelium loves it. Cow manure'll just need to be added to coir, straw, or horse manure at 30-50% due to it's consistency one brought to field capacity and pasteurized.

I can see how field aged, dried out cow pizza would also be awesome for growing cubes (and if not used exclusively for growing a whole number of other mushrooms as well), but it's not something one usually has access to. All I can get here are concentrated cow dung pellets and they aren't cheap, so horse nuggets are really my substrate of choice, since I can pick them up at half a dozen places for free.

About 25 miles from my house, in the country, there's a lonely fast food restaurant off of a major American Highway from which behind it lies 40 acres of concentrated field cow manure that's screaming my name, "HAMLOAF!".
Been around the rural block looking for a door to knock on but have had no luck. It's not above me to hop that fence in the middle of the night but I'd rather have permission. If I haven't made my way into the field by the next time I go out there, I'mma pick up a pic of the field and lay it down in this thread for you all to oogle at.

Lucky for you, indeed. I guarantee, with the skill level and enthusiasm to this hobby I have noticed you possess, you'r going to love manure over coir as it's the next level. Manure is just a little more work intensive then coir made up for by the fact that's it's free. Also personally, I find it much more gratifying to gatther and process my own manure then purchasing coir.
Also, you'll get to practice your pasteurization technique. Once you can pasteurize properly, this opens avenues for growing other type species that won't grow well on coir, such as Pan Cyans and Portobellos.

yup thats one of the main reasons i decided to go ahead and attempt manure..figured it'll show just how good my pasteurization is, and i have so many prints laying around other then cubes that i want to play with but not quiet ready for yet.
and thanks, i definately have a true love for this hobby!

I find this all very interesting and would love to see somebody actually try this experiment. If it's going to happen anywhere, it might as well be here on shroomery!
