Grafting for Fun and Practice - Questions
    #14058517 - 03/03/11 06:06 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

First time attempting grafting today. I have a sharp knife, some cleaning supplies, and two and a half cacti ready to rock and roll.
My two cacti you may have already met, my two Schlumbergera. I went to the gardening store and picked up a common variegated cactus on a columnar cactus.
My goal today is to graft a pup from the variegated cacti on a clipping or a full christmas cactus for fun and practice, as the title suggests.
I know that christmas cacti are hard to graft on to and don't make the best root stock. However, both cacti are slow growing and it would be neat to see one of these grafted on the christmas cactus.
Here's a group shot.

From here, it think my aim is to cut slant-ways on the christmas cactus, to get more surface area exposed, like I saw on a few videos on youtube.
Anyone have any advice? If not, i'll just put pics up later of my experiment and let you know how it goes. Thanks =D

And yet here I stand, no flesh, no bones, no seed or semen, All that's left is this Demon.

I guess I do have a couple questions. Taking a large variegated one like I have and grafting it to the first cladode on one of the main stocks wouldn't be a good idea would it? I'm guessing it would probably starve, and fall off. But a tiny pup would probably work, on say third or fourth cladode for a few years.
Not sure what I want to do with the rest of it, the cactus was sliced on the side. The columnar cactus is fine, and I'd probably want to graft Schlumbergera on it.
Ok enough rambling for now.

- edit - And how much of each cladode would I actually need? I'm sure as much of one as possible, but would half of one work or part? Only reason I ask is it may be easier in the long run unless it needs both halves.

I know it's not pretty, but at least I think I have the theory right and application will come eventually. Should it be more offset or will it be ok?

I don't even know if I've ever heard of this kind of graft being attempted before. Interesting though and good to see something new. Got links to anyone else's of this type of graft?

I really think it's going to be a challenge to get them to make a successful union. The Christmas cactus :puke:>>> Sorry about that but Christmas cactus have this effect on me.

Like I was saying, the christmas cactus will be too weak to support the scion. They're pretty floppy as they are and adding weight onto them would make them sag even more. Just read what you say about using the ones further down. I think this would be a better idea as it will be a bit stronger but you might find the inside to be too woody. I really don't know.

Also securing the scion will be difficult. You plan on using stakes and tape for support and to tie the Two together?

As for how much of the cladode to use I would say as much as possible. You probably want to cut just enough of the tip off so that you can get access to the Vascular Cambium. Cutting too deeply on most graft stocks tends not to work so good. I don't think Schlumbergera would have this problem as it is very soft the whole way through the cladode. The older growth does get corky though.

EDIT: Disregard what I typed as you've already done it. Looks ok to me as well. Fingers crossed.

Yeah, this was my first opportunity to graft. I'm doing it for the value that in a week or so, spending hours looking it up, I found only one pic of a christmas cactus being grafted on a pereskiopsis or columnar cactus....Pretty sure it was pereskiopsis.
I saw a few youtube videos of some german guy grafting them on Optunias.

-Update- I had a super stoner idea involving the extra scion I cut off and a clipping I had laying around. I cut the future stock on a strong bias, attached the scion and used one of my daughters plastic hair clips to bind them.
Hair-clip tek. Thanks for the luck, my plants need it.
