Farewell Mr. Mushrooms 18

The retired moderator and long time Shroomery enthusiast, Mr. Mushrooms, has passed away. MM was a very passionate and yet very private person, and he will be missed dearly by the Shroomery community and no doubt by those close to him. As respect to his privacy, I think MM would prefer that the details of his passing not become public, however I will say that he died in January, although I am only recently and vaguely informed of his death.
This past summer I was supposed to meet Mr. Mushrooms at a mycological foray, but we did not end up finally crossing paths... It is much to my regret that I never had the occasion of meeting him, though I know a few Shroomerites were so lucky.
I will miss his oddly and intensely passionate-to the point of obsessive-nature, and his strange sense of humor. He was always very helpful and encouraging of my mushroom passion, and always amusing to speak with.
Mr. Mushrooms, you were a legendary Shroomerite. I wish I could have said 'good bye'. Your presence here will not be forgotten!

Quote:
Mr. Mushrooms said: I will confess something that should be quite obvious, CC. I love mushrooms, i.e. fungi. I really do. I am talking about a strong feeling, i.e. emotion, for them. I think they are beautiful. I even dream of them.

Oh wow. That's some very sad news. He was a friend. I exchanged the last PMs with him in December when he wished me a Merry Christmas and said he'd mail me something in January if his health permitted it. I didn't even think that things were in any way serious. Now this explains why I haven't heard from him since. The passing of this kind human being is a true loss. A personal one as well as one for the whole shroomery community.
Godspeed, Mr. Mushrooms.

I will miss you friend...
A Tear And A Smile
I would not exchange the sorrows of my heart For the joys of the multitude. And I would not have the tears that sadness makes To flow from my every part turn into laughter.
I would that my life remain a tear and a smile.
A tear to purify my heart and give me understanding Of life's secrets and hidden things. A smile to draw me nigh to the sons of my kind and To be a symbol of my glorification of the gods.
A tear to unite me with those of broken heart; A smile to be a sign of my joy in existence.
I would rather that I died in yearning and longing than that I live Weary and despairing.
I want the hunger for love and beauty to be in the Depths of my spirit, for I have seen those who are Satisfied the most wretched of people. I have heard the sigh of those in yearning and Longing, and it is sweeter than the sweetest melody.
With evening's coming the flower folds her petals And sleeps, embracingher longing. At morning's approach she opens her lips to meet The sun's kiss.
The life of a flower is longing and fulfilment. A tear and a smile.
The waters of the sea become vapor and rise and come Together and area cloud.
And the cloud floats above the hills and valleys Until it meets the gentle breeze, then falls weeping To the fields and joins with brooks and rivers to Return to the sea, its home.
The life of clouds is a parting and a meeting. A tear and a smile.
And so does the spirit become separated from The greater spirit to move in the world of matter And pass as a cloud over the mountain of sorrow And the plains of joy to meet the breeze of death And return whence it came.
To the ocean of Love and Beauty----to God.

Oh fuck!
Argh! This is the nail in the worst day I've had in a while.
I have had the pleasure of dealing with Mr. Mushrooms, or what I liked to call him, Uncle(long story but the short is: We chatted on irc and we became close. Uncle was what I called him) for a while now and this is a shock to me. It wasn't long ago that I was helping him grow some cactus via the internet.

Mr.Mushrooms payed me compliment once. It wasn't because of what I did that made me proud, but because of who it was that was giving me the complement.
Hopefully the prints I sent gave him 1 moment of pleasure in the great eternity of time.

Wow, I was wondering where he went. Man, I wish he were still here. His advice and criticisms were a most important part of Shoomery. Thanks for making 99 to 2010 some of the best years on the shroomery, Mr. Mushrooms. May your elements be distributed to those creatures which you loved so dearly.
All of you stay safe and healthy.

I had the privileged of getting to know Mr. Mushrooms a little. His unique life experiences and intense passion made me question some of my values and i am a better person because of him.
Reasoning, from my experiences, tells me there are no gods. Its because of people like Matt that i choose to reject reason.
"I give you this one thought to keep - I am with you still - I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow, I am sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awake in the morning's hush I am the swift, uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not think of me as gone - I am with you still - in each new dawn."

Out of the thousands of Shroomery users, he was perhaps the one who has touched me most over the years. Not only because of his profound knowledge, but because of his willingness to learn at an age on which other's only expect to teach, and because of his profound respect for everyone and everything around him. Indeed, I have never had contact with anyone who so obviously and naturally was at peace with the cosmos.
Those who know me are aware that I'm a down-to-earth, pragmatic person who does not use hippie-talk much. But every single word in this post is heartfelt and sincere.
A void remains in the Shroomery society. A void which we cannot and will not fill, and a void that will serve as a monument for a luminous soul. What remains, is us. What remains, are the hollow men.
This is the way the world ends. This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper. - T.S. Eliot

May his family and friends remember him, and know he was respected and will be missed on shroomry.

RIP.
Although I didn't recognize him at first online, we actually did know each other. Before he moved east he lived in the Denver area, and was a regular at meetings of the Colorado Mycological Society, where we met and had many passionate discussions.
He had a rare enthusiasm for the hobby of mycology.
He will be missed.
Happy mushrooming!

A skilled mycologist and a compassionate person, thank you for your words of encouragement over the years, it meant a lot to me. I will miss you Matthew.
Among other things, he was the first to find Psilocybe caerulipes here at the Shoomery.

Matt walked with giants, may he rest in peace.

wow, sad news. here's Mr Mushrooms last photo he sent me in December

this is the P Subaeruginascens/ovoids conical type found in San Francisco that's proving difficult to cultivate, and he was working on it and said he would post in forums whenever something important happened
Basically, he was not convinced this conical type is related to Ovoids in Ohio and said the mycelium grows 'slow as hell' and all I know is that he had some of it buried already somewhere near him
whatever he did with the print, maybe it'll keep going for years and years. I got a feeling things he left behind will sprout
RIP, Mr Mushrooms you will be missed
PS, is that really him in the first photo?

This may have been his last thread.
Quote:
Mr. Mushrooms said: My how time flies.
It only seems like yesterday I was riding with my Dad on the way to our construction job when a newscast interrupted one of the muzak radio stations, the kind that never reported the news, said, "Last night former Beatle, John Lennon, was shot and killed outside his apartment in New York City."
Every year, this day, the tragedy descends again. The wound opens and all the memories of John, the Beatles, and things associated with him and them come flooding back. A madman, a so-called "Jesus Freak," murdered a man of peace. Some people are really sick.
After his death I moved to NYC and built skyscapers but John was the real reason I was there. I actually met David Peel, John's former associate/friend and the president of Orange Records. Later, after I moved back home, David sent me a handwritten letter asking me to come back and live with him.
Psychology 101: why do some people murder other's heroes?
Two years ago I made this video for John and posted it on YouTube.
RIP John. You are remembered and missed.
RIP MM, You too are remembered and missed.

What can I say? I'm devastated...Mr. Mushrooms was a close, personal friend of mine. Mr. M. was an extremely private person, so I wont say much and I hope he forgives me for sharing this, but I need the therapy.
I've hunted with Mr. Mushrooms on several occasions, in fact, he was the first person I've ever hunted mushrooms with. I can personally attest to his almost child-like fascination with fungi. I was quite noobish the first time we hunted together, and was amazed at Mr. M's excitement over what I at the time considered mundane things. I suppose I was like a child myself, as I kept asking "What's this? What's that?" There was a definite respect for each others' curiosity.
Once, during a morel hunting road trip, the axle in Mr. M.'s vehicle broke...many miles from home... in a state park...on a Sunday. We spent pretty much the entire day pushing the vehicle, locating some tools, going to the auto parts store, and replacing the axle with Dannyglick's help. Afterward, he took his copy of Mushrooms Demystified, wrote a note of thanks on the cover page and gave it to me. He had to go buy a replacement copy for himself... so yeah...
Mr. M. definitely encouraged my passion for mushrooms and was probably the main reason I stuck around the Shroomery. He personally coached me on how to find morels. Suddenly, for me, mushroom hunting has become more and less meaningful at the same time. I feel wounded.
Very well said, Koraks.
I miss him too, Falcon.
I dream of mushrooms too, Mr. M.
-------------------- Mr. Mushrooms said: I will confess something that should be quite obvious, CC. I love mushrooms, i.e. fungi. I really do. I am talking about a strong feeling, i.e. emotion, for them. I think they are beautiful. I even dream of them.

Oh wow, this is terrible news.
I have spoken to Matt a fair bit in the past, although not for quite a while. I even spoke to him on the phone once, which considering I live in Australia, I thought quite surprising. He was clearly a beautiful human being and an incredible contributor to the community here. He will be sorely missed, both for his knowledge and for his personality, which so often helped to mediate problems and issues when people expressed them, as well as bringing a lighter yet intelligent tome to many threads.

Mr. Mushrooms was really cool. I will miss the three minute phone calls that somehow turned into four hour phone calls and his passionate dislike for dna sequencing. I sequenced some of his collections and I guess he will never see the results. He was really good about sending out collections and always had excellent packaging. Also he sent me a lot of other cool stuff and I really appreciate it.
He was a great user to trade with and always had the highest standards of integrity.
He may have been around 54 or so but never acted like he was over 25. I hope that I am that awesome when I am in my 50's.
We had agreed to do some serious work on Gymnopilus and I guess that will never happen.
His passing is a poignant reminder that any of us can go at any time and its really important to make good use of our time by cultivating meaningful relationships with others. He was really good at that.

I can remember hearing Matt yelling at me to get my ass moving as I staggered downstairs with my hangover to go hunting with him.
I had had the privilege to hunt with him for several hours. He was so professional about hunting and collecting mushrooms I was in awe, and felt like a turd compared to him.
He had an awesome sense of humor and after only a few moments of being around Matt, you felt as if you'd always known him.
He was a voice of reason. When he believed strongly about something, he let it be known. He was a big strong man. It's hard to believe he is gone.
I for one miss him terribly. I wish we could hunt one more time together.
Goodbye Mr. Mushrooms. Later on man.

I received my first (rather large) collection of exotic active spore prints from him accompanied by a real nice letter even though I had hardly spoken with him before. I didn't only keep the prints, but also saved the letter. You won't find a more openhearted person than him. Even though we disagreed on our views of the World and its creation and such it would be a so much better place if more people were like Matt.

Hey bob z,i think that was the foray i was supposed to attend and couldn't make it because i had vehicle problems as well.I had contacted him to let him know that i couldn't make that particular trip and he said that the whole trip turned into a big shitstorm and that he would plan another for this year, Ill always look back at that as a missed opportunity to meet a seemingly extraordinary person and one hell of a mushroom hunt He will be missed but not forgotten!

The picture was taken during one of the first NE gatherings back in 2003. He is indeed wearing a Gandalf Mask. So happy to read this and see how many he touched. We had a similar ride in that old (blue?) van of his... We went to Bob Smoleys Cactus World together. He taught me a lot more about attitude than mushrooms. He will be truly missed.

I spoke with Senore Hongos on many occasions since Ive been here at the Shroomery. He was always quick to help with an ID or just basic info if you needed it. Seeing good people around you move on is a part of life and it is sad, but Bobs story about his experience with Matt put a smile on my face because its stories like that, that keep those people close to us in our heaarts and minds forever. Someone that alot of us never met in person that can make that much of an impression on you is obviously a special person. Being sad he is gone is natural but let those memories and stories you have of him live on in your hearts and be happy that you were able to have those moments. Lifes short, love one another. Rest in Peace Senore Hongos

Noooooo.
I haven't signed in in quite some time due to a new career, but this is not the first thing I wanted to read. He lived about 20 minutes from me and was somewhat of a mushroom mentor for me since he knew my local habitats. It's ironic, I was telling one of my usual mushroom hunting companions about him this weekend, saying how he was an OG mushroom hunter.

this is nuts and i thank wiscokid for letting me know of this since ive been busy as hell since my trip to mexico.
Bob i had no idea matt was your mentor!!! holy christ ,i didnt know you guys even knew each other personally. your story like already said made my eyes water.
so my first experience with MM since i rejoined 2 years ago was his interest in my flat semilanceatas and my interesting different field stuntziis. this guy hounded me like no other! i said i would give him prints no worries but i am a bit of a burnout and wasnt so with it then when it came to sending stuff out. he got pissed off about waiting for a month and actually went off the wall calling me names and shit saying it was a personal attack and i was sending it out to others but not him, when i was just lazy.
so i brushed him off and was like what ever buddy, too bad for you.
so fast forward 2 years and i find conocybe cyanopus. he knew months before i sent spores to alan to confirm this, that it was indeed conocybe cyanopus . he was like a kid in a candy store type xcited and he was like hey man do you think you can send me a print?
i was like wtf, do you remember who i am, your a fuckin asshole . you totally dissed me . well to make a kinda long story short i am the type of person who forgives and i also realy really respect and like other people who know and love mushrooms more than i!! he said he has been trying to obtain a C cyanopus sample for 20 years. how could i not give someone so passionate about getting this a print!!??
i guess i could have been a prick but fuck that, were all mushroom amigos. since that day we talked and gave each other samples and talked music as he was also a guitar fanatic and i play the mandolin.
he was a great dude. its really sad news.

As other people have stated first and foremost thank you CureCat for taking time out to inform the community of this tragic loss.
I had the pleasure during my not so long time here on shroomery of interacting with MM a few times and even have the honor of a 5 shroom rating + a nice comment from the man himself . I feel extra honored now since he has passed to have known such a nice and helpful fellow, however brief our acquaintance may have been.
May you rest in peace brother.

I realize this post is 6 months old now but I believe it should continue to be seen...
I had the privilege of being contacted by Mr.M to "conversate" several times, on Google talk. I would never have believed he was in his 50's given the energy and enthusiasm in his voice! We discussed many things, agreed & Disagreed, but always enjoyed the debate! When I messaged after xmas I found it strange to not receive a reply, but I just assumed he was busy with "projects" or life... I figured in the fall we'd hook up again and pick up right were we left off His final message to me said about the holidays being upon us, and Heaven help us all.... Followed by these lines which I just keep reading over and over....
Mr.Mushrooms: We'll talk sometime soon... I am never in a hurry!
I wanted to write a lot more but as I write this now the tears are pooling in my eyes, I'm not one to cry but I genuinely Miss Someone I never had the honour to meet in person... "I'm not in a hurry but we'll talk soon friend!"

Liberty King sent me a PM about this just last night - shocked to say the least. He was a great online friend that I never had the pleasure to meet. We first had conversations over ten years ago when I first joined under the alias St Thomas. We chatted on MSN, exchanged ideas, prints and even came within inches of going on a hunt together - he almost hopped in the car to make the long drive from Ohio to Ottawa, Ontario. Sadly we never got that chance. When I stopped by the Shroomery two years ago for the first time since 2002 he immediately sent me a PM and was ecstatic I was back - needless to say we had a lot to talk about.
He sent me some prints just before Christmas and I feel bad that I was unable to return the favour. I'll keep his Christmas card and get those prints fruiting in his honour.
Matt was a valuable addition to this community and I was proud to call him friend.
I really hope the fungi are feasting on you Mr. Mushrooms - it's what you would have wanted.
Cheers to you sir!
If anyone wants to PM me the details of his passing it would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately we never got to hunt together. St Thomas

I'm so glad to see this thread being posted in again. Matt was an awesome person, pure in heart and soul. I wish I would have taken more opportunities to speak with him. I still get tears in my eyes when thinking about how much he helped me, and how he contributed to this community. I've recently decided to get the "bad taxonomy can kill" tattooed on my shoulder, along with his name written below. You will never be forgotten Mr. Mushrooms.
RIP Matt

I'm glad to see this thread isn't done for yet and I'm only bumping a week-old reply :P Mr. Mushrooms was a great guy and whenever I see his old posts (quite often - that guy sure loved mushrooms) I remember back to some conversations we've had. Figured I had to find this thread and pay my respects.

This is really sad news, even if it's kinda old news to most of ya'll. I remember MM even though I never met him in person.I always felt a slight kinship or whatever you want to call it with him, even though we didn't interact that much here at the Shroomery, mainly due to my absence here. After reading some of these posts it seems MM and I had a lot in common, such as age, the diabetes, and of course the love of mushrooms, especially the hunting part.Maybe that was it. Wish I did have the opportunity to have met him in person like some of you did.I'm sure the ones that did meet/know him in person realize what a loss his parting is.
RIP Mr.Mushrooms. And my condolences to his friends and family.

I realize this is an old thread and if it is an issue for me to post so be it!... It is that time of yeah again when Mushrooms are abundant and that is always exciting for me... but yet I still have a void knowing that I will not be able to converse about my hunts with a fellow shroomerite who I greatly miss... Here's to you R.I.P. Mr.Mushrooms

Thanks Alan & CC... I never called him Matt before... Just saw that others had used the name in this thread so I assumed it must be his name. We always called each other by Shroomery Names, neither one of us were very concerned about anything other than the fungus in our talks.

As Liberty Cap season is once more here I find myself again combing through some research papers that Mr.Mushrooms went out of his way to purchase and send to me, they have been the single most valuable documents in my collection! Every time I find something new of interest and then find myself wanting to call him up and probe his brain. I wish you were still here with us friend! You are Truly missed!

Yeah, he did like that name. He got published as a collector in journal article under that name. He would have got a kick out of that...

Just found out... I don't know what to say... We lost the best mushroom hunter I ever talked to. My condolences to anybody that knew him personally, it is hard to loose such a good person. The greater the person the greater the pain when they die.
Just this morning I passed on some info about Ps. caerulipes he gave me back in 08, told me exactly where he found them before.
What a gentle wise caring soul, I hope his memory lives on.

It's that Time of year again, where I wonder how many more seasons I've got left... and If I'll ever have half the knowledge Mr.Mushrooms possessed about Fungi! He was such a Great person, and resource, to discuss things with on the Phone. I often struggled to keep up with my notes while he excitedly discussed a theory... I wish I'd had the opportunity to meet him in person but just our conversations alone made me feel like I knew the guy anyway. So Here's to you Mr.Mushrooms
