Discolored San Pedro?
    #14052678 - 03/02/11 02:50 AM (13 years, 3 days ago)

What causes discoloration of San Pedro like this? Is it possible that such discoloration could affect alkaloid content?

Neglect usually causes cactus to look like that.  They look good to go and totally stressed.  I'd either tea them up or cut them and dehydrate them.

You know, I am beginning to think the whole stressing theory-produces-more-mescaline is nonsense.  I had a bunch of cactus from the same source that I planted and a bunch that I stressed for six months.  The stressed cactus looked like yours and I noticed no difference in intensity of the trip when compared to their growing and thriving brothers.

You know the Ethnobotanical Garden is slipping when the only response is to cut them up for consumption.
Nothing against you joemolloy, just saying it like it is.

I vote you grow them, or at least a couple. What have you to lose? Growing a cactus can teach you alot more than eating one can.

Like joemolloy said, they look like that due to neglect. Can't be anymore specific because we have no back story. Probably been in storage for an age and then some.

That box of cuttings reminds me of a cut up human body for some reason. Nightmare material I tell you.:smirk:

there looks to be some rot at the edges on the far right one and the far left one. Don't eat the rot and do plant a few if not all of them.

well my :2cents: is almost never welcome.

it seems you were in a hurry to buy cacti to eat.

and thats all good and fine. believe ne, and i could not be happier for you..

BUT... throw away what looks sickly. please do and be patient.

grow the only piece that looks great, and i see a few.

let it grow for one year. then cut a 3 footer. its good and you'll be fine.

you'll be okay.

My suggestion would be to plant the shitty looking ones and grow them out.
I never throw any thing out if its not dead I will plant the piece no matter how small or scabby it is.
Here is some examples of the what can not only survive but grow on to be a nice plant

Cheers

plant it; wouldn't recommend eating it, when san pedro's go through hell they can become dormant. From what I hear, when they are dormant they produce an enzyme that kills mescaline and other alkaloids...

Thanks for the advice guys. I will be growing these. I am curious as to how they got discolored. Do you guys think it was storage and lack of light? Physical abuse? Too much water? Not enough water? Disease?

Awesome pics GoOnThen! Really cool!

I dont know what the damage is from it could be a number of things I have recently had four bridgesii which got lumpy black patches on them which started oozing black tar like stuff I didnt do any thing about it because it looked like it was just under the skin. After a couple of weeks it has all dried up on all but one plant and has left a brown scars where it was on the others.
The things I noticed about this whole episode was It was only on bridgesii and it was on the same side of each plant so for me It was on the northeast side of each plant. This wasn't caused be sunburn It could have been an insects other than that I dont know.
One other thing to note is this happened to only four plants out of fifteen bridgesii in my collection and in all there are approximately fifty trichs all together.

I cant help my self when it comes to cacti I have been given some very sad looking plants and so far I haven't had one that I ha vent saved the plant or grown out a cutting from a near dead plant. Some of the small plants in my pics are from skinny elongated tips that where near white when I planted them they then got sun burnt but they live on.
The other small pieces are bits I cut of cuttings that I have had that looked a bit dodgy and they have all grown. The small pieces do grow small pups and are a bit slow but I will use them as grafting stock.

I just cant throw thing out if It might grow or be useful for something I keep it. You should see the shit I have in my shed

Cheers

Some info on the black spots from the BCSS Journal. Not a typical sun burn and bacteria is also implicated :

Nice thanks Mostly

The only thing that I can think of that could have caused this to be so selective on these bridgesii is the couple of weeks of high temps we have recently and I gave them a feed of liquid fert in that time.
I apply the liquid fertilizer with a watering can and i always pore it over the cacti as well as in the pot maybe the bridgesii reacted to this and the hot days.
Funny that this only affects trich and harrisias

Cheers

That's a good article Mostly.

I've been wanting to put some of the "ooze" under the microscope to see if bacteria is present but I have yet to have an outbreak amongst my flock. I know it's only a matter of time though and I hope to at least try to find out what it is.

I do get a few black dots near the apex of my trichs but they dry up almost straight away and I think it's only from where bugs feed and isn't a disease/bacterial problem.

Nice  I wouldn't have thought there'd of been much hope for cuttings that small.

Interesting read M_H, now I know what was going on with my pachanoi not so long ago. After unsuccessfully rooting due to rot, the pach was cut back & left under a hot veranda (receiving no more than an hour of sunlight) to try and speed up callousing, this resulted in oozing & further rot, eventually making everything take longer

On the bright side I'm slowly but surely figuring out a good level of heat & sunlight for my other cacti & they seem to be doing all the better for it
Before in full sun...

More sheltered spot, but still not enough.

Safe & sound  (& a noticeable increase in growth)
