so who uses ubuntu... and what do you think about it?
    #14057522 - 03/02/11 10:46 PM (13 years, 3 days ago)

reason I ask, is windows 7 has finally crossed the line today.

I wont explain because I don't want to type that much... but lets just say I'm sick of dealing with windows errors and what not... pretty much EVERY FUCKING DAY :crankey:

is it better?.. or at least a little more user friendly?

I use windows vista. Meh..

I play diablo 2 and it hardly works. Not beause the graphics but because it simply does not mesh well with windows vista. It takes the game 5 mins to load.

I've been using Ubuntu for a couple years now, and I love it. I've been using windows since win95 and I'll never go back

On windows it would always get bogged down every little while and it seemed like every other day I would be dealing with a problem. I haven't had a single problem with ubuntu so far, and its running just as fast right now as the day I installed it.

Everything is free; the OS, apps, support, etc.

Boots and shuts down VERY quickly.

Don't have to worry about viruses and all the other windows bs infections.

Updates run quickly and don't get in the way.

Better security.

Many others.

I dual boot my laptop with xp and ubuntu and the only thing I use xp for is torrents. I'm always on ubuntu.

Yeah I'm switching to Ubuntu soon as well.

Found out how to get FL working on there so that's all I really give a shit about.

love it. but i spend a lot of my time on the computer programming and developing  ...Or hacking and tinkering.

True I could install cygwin, but I am much happier working in linux. I find keeping a virtual machine with win7 necessary mainly for MS Office. while I use open office without difficulty I like to cross check things in MS office. Everyone at work uses MS Office.

I should add that I stayed away from the command line the first 6+ months of using ubuntu.

I have tried CentOs and often find myself ssh'ing into a redhat server. However, I am much happier with the community surrounding ubuntu.

Also, Kush, why would you use XP only for torrents? ubuntu comes with tranmission. I perfer to use deluge.

No, torrents work fine on ubuntu.

By dual booting I mean that I had windows on my computer, and when I was going through the install with ubuntu I chose the option to install it alongside windows. So when I turn on the computer I can choose which one to boot

If you're having trouble with Windows 7 for day-to-day use, you're going to have trouble with Ubuntu as well...

I haven't had an error on my computer running Win7 in a year (basically since it came out).

It works fine, but you have to change some of the settings under right click -> Properties -> Compatibility.  Check "Run this program in compatibility mode for: and select Windows XP (Service Pack 2), and also check Run as administrator and Disable desktop composition.

:lolsy: yeah, uh... no.

Honestly, if you can't get something designed to be readily used, I would avoid any *nix platform except macs.  I would just avoid those because in my experience they are vastly overpriced and the operating system isn't anything to be happy with

I triple boot 7/xp/ubuntu

my favorite as far as stability is linux

I use xp for games

7 is just as fast as ubuntu imo, and it's great that it fetches most, if not all of the drivers your comp needs.

you're gonna have to learn the terminal, op
