Monotub advice
    #14057285 - 03/02/11 09:56 PM (13 years, 3 days ago)

I just harvested a full canopy of Brazilians. Problem is, the sub they were attached to was evidently dry as hell. Each row I picked brought (I shit you not) 3" of sub with it. Basically, half the depth of the sub came up in chunks during harvest.

So, if this happened to you, what would you do next?

1. Crumble the chunks of sub, dunk the whole thing, and let it recolonize.

2. Toss the loose substrate, dunk what's left, put it back into fruiting.

3. Heavily mist the sub chunks, put it back into vegetative mode by sealing it up and letting it colonize again before fruiting.

do a dunk for 6 hours or so with whats left..

next time gently twist the mushrooms as you harvest this will limit the amount of sub that you rip out..

You picked the fruits too early.  When cubensis mushrooms are prime for harvesting, they'll readily come right off of the substrate with no resistance no matter what size the fruits are, causing no damage to the substrate left behind.

Prime harvesting time for cubes is right before the veil begins to tear.  If mushrooms don't wanna give up their substrate easily right as the veil begins to tear, let them fruit for another day or 2, letting the mushroom decide when it's ready to be picked.  Always remove each fruit individually, giving the mushroom a gentle twisting motion while gently pulling the fruit body away from the substrate, as well.

Just imagine a mono that got the top 3 inches of sub ripped off. Then imagine a giant bowl sitting next to it full of little Brazilians, 38.56oz wet.

These were all small because I'm betting they ran out of water. Brazil usually gets super big under the right conditions. I'm not complaining due to the density but the size sucks.

@ Hamloaf: These were all full on open and dumping spores. There were maybe a dozen that hadn't popped their veils. The sub was just unbelievably dry for inches under each row. I've never seen this happen before. Now that I think about it, I bet there were rhizo ropes really deep into the sub that was feeding it water (under the 3 inches of dry sub) and they were "rooted" to this water source.

Yeah it's kinda nice but I'm kicking myself thinking if the sub had been properly hydrated they'd be alot bigger. It started out awesome with pins everywhere, then seemed to give up at 2-3". I'm thinking that's when it ran out of water.

I've seen these things get well over 6" tall on average and with a baseball-sized cap. I wanna see that again. :yesnod:

i believe ur dryness could be at fault here, but you can always help this situation by getting optimal levels of calcium in your sub and casing layer gypsum for bulk sub and HL and oyystershell for your casing layer... oystershell is a great texturizor and long term calcium depositor definatly not over rated... with proper moister and ph levels your subs should not end up like this...

When that happend i usually crumble the chunks of sub, dunk it and for the second flush put a light casing...

Yeah, like I said initially this is very unusual for me. It really surprised me, I've seen lots of monos grow and none have done this before. I've decided to crumble the sub, dunk then spread a thin layer of coir over the top of everything as a casing layer. It's not real casing but it should keep the bad guys out for a little while.
