Nope. Install ubuntu after windows, doing the opposite will blow grub away (bootloader). You can fix that, [but it's a PIA.

Ubuntu is great. It's my basic OS for all general tasks. I still need Windows for Adobe CS5. But I do absolutely no web browsing in Windows anymore so the platform stays squeaky clean. Windows strictly for proprietary software. Open source for everything else FTW.

Here's the easiest way of looking at it. Windows holds your hand; Linux doesn't. This is fine for most things like web browsing and such but you will come across a program that doesn't want to easily run in Linux and instead of it taking you 5 minutes to to in Windows its going to take you 5 hours to get it working in Linux.

Not worth the hassle imo.

My boyfriend uses ubuntu and it's great.

I use windows 7 only because I don't want to have to deal with compatibility issues for games and shit. I could get my boyfriend to set up a dual boot for me, but right now since this laptop is new from october, I have no need to use ubuntu because windows 7 is still working fine with little to no errors and my computer's running fast.

I'd recommend ubuntu if your windows keeps givin you shit.

OSX is better than both in my opinion, but Linux and OSX have two different purposes for me. I like my Linux all command line performing server operations, no GUI, while using OSX i like the best interface I can get to build the best products I can using all the power of servers and databases. It makes for a great combo than can't be found anywhere else.

The software for OSX is often open source or community driven and strives for the best. Regardless of Apple the brand, the professionals that use it have the highest of expectations and build the best class of products. I have used all the systems for years and there is no comparison to the design that goes into an OSX application vs anything else. Other things works sure, but the interfaces are almost always lacking compared to their OSX/iOS counterpart.

My computer runs awesome on ubuntu.  I bought a new laptop last week, the first thing I did was nix windows and put ubuntu on (I'm not a gamer).

you're gonna have to learn the terminal

it helps but you dont need to learn it.

my mom and little bro have been using linux for about 4 years now.. they dont know anything about the terminal.

there has not been any windows computers in my house for a loong time.

i'd disagree with that when talking about Ubuntu specifically. Ubuntu holds your hand just as much (if not more) than Windows. if we were talking about something like Slackware or Arch it would be a different story..

RP, heres a quick breakdown:

Linux negatives:
  • no Bluray playback
  • no Netflix streaming
  • most commercial games will not work
  • no DRM infected media files (ie: Audible)
  • video editing isnt the greatest right now
  • the gimp is fine for 99.99% of people but if you need something like CMYK support or 16bit color youll still need to use Photoshop.

most of these things above dont work because the content creators refuse to support the linux desktop. for example: most bluray players and the Roku streaming Netflix devices all run linux at the core BUT Netflix and the studios do not want the content to be made available to linux users because they think we are all unwilling to pay for stuff or we will try to pirate it. (not true btw) there is no technical reason they couldnt work.

Linux positives:
  • near limitless customization options
  • more efficient (aka faster)
  • most things are completely free
  • fast updates and bug fixes
  • welcoming community
  • easier to use
  • better UI (windows font rendering is horrendous imo)

learning the terminal would help but i dont think its necessary anymore. my bro bought a new computer about a year ago, he blew out windows and installed Ubuntu on his own. hes been using it daily ever since and has no idea how the terminal works. he used it on a netbook for like 3 years before that without issue.

Thanks for making this thread op. I was actually planning on making a similar thread last night,

BUT THEN MY GODDAMN COMPUTER WOULDN'T STOP BSOD'ING.:crankey:

I run windows 7 and i have been plagued by blue screens of death
nearly the entire time i've had it...since august. I'm at my wit's
end and am so sick of losing progress in papers or getting booted right
when i am about to make the best post ever on here.

It's fucking ridiculous, nothing i've tried has worked.
so i have been considering the switch to linux...

Anybody have experience with windows bsod's?
will linux end the bullshit?

I had one BSOD in the past but was able to fix it myself. I don't think linux has a similar problem.

One thing I forgot to mention earlier about linux, is that it can be used to remove viruses/infections from windows and recover files should windows ever fail :awesomenod:

Mint philosophy > Ubuntu philosophy, although they are practically the same OS.
