HDD Raid 0 or SSD?
    #14055041 - 03/02/11 02:37 PM (13 years, 3 days ago)

So my crappy hard drive I pulled from an old Dell I had a few years ago is a major bottleneck for my computer and I've decided my next upgrade would be a new one. I don't really have the cash to fork out for a SSD (and am really running out of room) so I thought maybe I'd get some sort of raid set up. I've heard that larger HDDs are faster due to the higher platter density.

I read large/high density HDDs performance is comparable to a raptor and two in raid is similar speeds to a SSD. So far I was thinking about getting two of these 1TB Samsung Spinpoints because of the size and they're relatively quiet. I don't wanna get raptors cause they're too loud and I'm aiming for a near silent computer (at least while idle, my next upgrade will be to replace these loud ass 4850s haha).  Any better suggestions?

After doing some more reading I found out that maybe HDD's in raid 0 wont improve performance that much, at least not the performance I want (random read/write speeds) anyone know if my pc will feel quicker (faster startup/loading programs and games) from 2 HDDs in raid 0? or do you need a SSD to see a noticeable difference?

I don't like higher speed HDD's; they seem to break faster, and understandably so.  A 5400 RPM 1 TB drive is fine for now, although I see myself spilling over that in the next month or so...

I wouldn't run 2 HDDs in RAID 0 unless it was for gaming.
I doubt it'll help with most mundane Windows tasks.

Never owned a Samsung HDD, so I can't say.
I'd recommend Western Digital.

The SSD goes as fast as your system bus can handle and if you want to upgrade in the future you will be able to a RAID 0 on that. Which would obviously be better than HDD Raid 0.

Yeah I guess it depends on whether I wanna fork out the cash for a small SSD or go a couple HDDs for more value. I think most of the stuff you notice though relies on random reads/writes and HDDs are horrible for that, but I don't know if raid helps that or not so I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with hdds in raid 0 and if they noticed a difference in speed.

I do use my computer for gaming and converting video files and such as well however.

Im also keen on upgrading my HDD, it is the bottle neck in my gaming PC.

I have a separate PC for bulk storage, so I dont need lots of space.  I considered HDD Raid 0 and SSD, and am going to get the SSD.  I will probably get a 64 GB C300, they are just over $100.
