Anti-drug ads 'effectively reduce marijuana use among teens' March 2, 2011 - DNA
A study, led by a researcher from Ohio Sate University, has provided evidence that anti-drug campaigns effectively reduce marijuana use among teenagers.
It looked at self-reported exposure to two anti-drug campaigns and measured the frequency of drug use in teens from 20 middle-school communities.
The study found that messages that highlighted teen autonomy and aspirations were more effective than previous campaigns with more negative focuses.
With an aim to measure the effectiveness of an experimental campaign ‘Be Under Your Own Influence’, Michael Slater, professor of communication at Ohio Sate University, and his colleagues also focussed on the national campaign ‘Above the Influence’.
They realised that the two unrelated campaigns were launched at the same time and promoted similar messages.
“The results of the ‘Be Under Your Own Influence’ campaign are swamped by the effects of the national campaign,” Slater told the Discovery News.
He said both campaigns focused on the inconsistencies of teens' personal autonomy and how drugs affect that balance.
The ‘Be Under Your Own Influence’ campaign, which focused on mostly print materials, was studied by using four different set-ups.
Students were directly exposed to the campaign in the classroom, exposed through media in the local community or exposed to both or neither.
The team found teens who reported exposure to the ‘Be Under Your Own Influence’ also reported the lowest marijuana use the most when community involvement was added to the picture.
On the other hand, they found the ‘Above the Influence’ national campaign could reduce an early teen's chance of trying the drug simply through exposure.
“We also asked about fake campaigns to rule out fakers,” said Slater.
This way, students who reported to have been exposed to non-existent ads and made-up drugs were ruled out from the sample.
Though the findings point to the success of anti-drug ads, Slater is not afraid to point out the research's weaknesses.
He also said future research would need to use larger sample sizes to further confirm these findings.
The research appears in the March issue of Prevention Science.

So was there a decent time limit in between these campaigns and a post evaluation, just b/c they don't blaze in middle school doesn't mean they wont later down the road (esp. college years)... huge methodological flaw if you ask me. I was completely anti-drug in middle school then went to highschool and started smoking and experimenting with psychedelics due to my own influence and the adverse effects of bad anti-drug ads.

I'm sure the stupid ads are very effective on Ohio middle schoolers who don't even know what drugs even are. Dare was really effective on me in 6th grade, but the second a cute girl I liked asked me to smoke with her, that shit went straight out the window.

So essentially the best results can't come from a commercial alone. These ads are bullshit anyway. They still lie to teens and aren't honorable or desirable. How about an honest dialogue about drugs in the context of legalization/regulation?
"Honey, drugs are available at the store to help you relax and socialize, but if you turn to them too often instead of exercising, socializing without drugs, or doing something else you like they'll hurt you and it will be hard to quit. Remember to take off your shoes if they're dirty when you come in. Looove you."

Did it at any point occur to them that the teens might lie about their drug use?

middle-school
There lies the problem. I was given a survey of this type back in middle school, and it was given before and after an abstinence course. Before, we responded truthfully, but afterward, we put down all of the "wrong" answers just to screw up their data.

You can't rely on the word of a middle-school kid.

What does it matter that cannabis use is "down"? If it's illegal nobody should be using it. Prohibition-fail.
