To what degree do we restrict Air Exchange during Bulk Colonization?
    #14051259 - 03/01/11 09:22 PM (13 years, 4 days ago)

Well, this all spawned from this post: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/14043924/fpart/1
We've come to the conclusion that colonizing bulk in trash bags is out-dated information. However, our discussion continues w/ the title of this post.

We've discovered many different ways to colonize bulk in regards to restriction of AE while letting GE occur. Now, since the post has changed gears, we need a new discussion to help those newly researching this idea.

Let's discuss our procedures & views on the amount of AE during bulk colonization.

Personally, I have 3 different lid set ups for my bulk tubs. I have several that have (1) 3/4" hole covered w/ a Synthetic Filter Disk (SFD), others have (2) 3/4" holes covered w/ SFD's & several w/out holes.  All holes are in the lid. Therefore, I have little to NO AE during colonization. It's all GE

:stoner:

how much GE is too much b4 early pinning becomes an issue, I like to control my pinning not let it "breath" so much during colonization that it starts pinning whenever it wants to. :mushroom2:

I have always let the air space in the tub and what GE is allowed through the lid be my GE. then once fully colonized I stuff the previously taped FAE holes with poly (adjusted using a hygrometer) during fruiting. :strokebeard:

I do pretty much the exact same thing..  The GE happens around my loose fitting lids..  Then once colonization is at 100% I then take the tape off my holes and stuff them with polyfill or allow them to stay open for maximum fresh air exchange..

I'd have to disagree. We don't want AE during colonization, because we'd cause premature pinning due to evaporating water from the substrate...

I will try to tape all holes except one and two of the holes above, under the lid, next tubs.
I cover the open holes with tyvek.
Should be enough for some GE.
We will see how this work.

Also...  It's not technically the evaporating water that causes
premature pinning.  It's the less humid, O2 containing, fresh air that
sets evaporation, and thus primordia development, into motion.

To the degree necessary to hold CO2 in the neighborhood of 10K to 20K ppm.  You can get a CO2 meter for under $300.

Yea, also, thank you. That's what I was really hoping, is that someone could just easily lay it all out.

Damn it, well I guess that's settled.

Anyone want to send me $300 so I can go buy one?
