homemade windturbine
    #14051911 - 03/01/11 11:01 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

this video got me thinking about possibly generating some of my own green energy. :strokebeard: specifically, i was looking at the vertical axis windmill. i feel like it could prove worthwhile if used alongside some solar panels or something...

has anyone every tried green energy? is it a worthwhile venture?

The biggest problem I have run into with DIY wind power is noise.

Here's another cool wind mill that has no moving parts.

I think it would be cool to use these as rungs for a railing of a deck or something like that.  They're cheep so you can make a bunch of them, but they wont always be generating electricity, but it'll be nice when they are.

Did you actually watch the video?  No moving parts?  When something flaps around in the wind, it is a moving part.

I meant like mechanical movement, no ball bearings, no turbines.

Just a thin piece of metal, some magnets, and some coils of copper.

There is still mechanical movement, but no rotational movement.  The vane flapping back and forth is certainly mechanical movement.

> Just a thin piece of metal, some magnets, and some coils of copper.

For this setup to generate power, the magnetic field from the magnets most move with respect to the coils of copper.
