6500k bulbs. Why? What? Where? How?

Why are they better?
What do they provide to the mushrooms?
Where do I get them?
How is it better than another light?
Thank you for your answers!

They are better because they simulate natural daylight.....without the crazy heat that the sun puts out
http://www.mushroomvideos.com/Terrarium-Tek
scroll down to the bottom two paragraphs and you will see......the CFL's are cheap, you can also find them at home depot and lowes for like 7 bucks....

You can put #lighting at the end of that link and it takes you right to the correct spot on the page. http://www.mushroomvideos.com/Terrarium-Tek#lighting RR

Ok, I will be as complete as I can. You know how if you heat metal it will glow red and then eventually white? Well one way of measuring the color of light being given off by something is the "kelvin" system. Different lightbulbs give off different colors and they are expressed in this system. Some lights are only labeled as "soft," "daylight," "cool," etc. However more an more often lights also have their colors expressed in degrees Kelvin. The lower the number the closer to the red spectrum of color the light is. The higher the number, the closer to blue. 6500k is a good choice because it is a pretty good match to the natural sunlight outside. Just because a bulb says "daylight" does not mean it is 6500K. As life on earth has evolved to light like this, plants and living organisms respond best to it. In fact you could get lights even at a higher degree K, but I don't think the technology is there yet for that to be common in home lighting.
You can buy proper lights at walmart, lowes, kmart, target, just look for compact florescent bulbs, or florescent tubes, because incandescent lights are very low in degrees K.
they provide the mushrooms with the conditions they would find in nature.

A little confused because I don't see anything, anywhere, on most light bulb packages that says anything whatsoever about Degrees K. The only ones I can find are 2700K. Am I just a moron?

Where are you looking for them? If you go to home depot or lowes just ask an electrician that works there...The "daylight" CFL's are mostly all 6500K but some don't say it on the package....Either that or just buy a 48 inch 2 tube flourescent fixture and buy two tubes that are 6500K, they say it right on the package of tubes....And are cheap too. Fixture + tubes will be less than 20 bucks total....

haha, thanks. but 6500k are specs that most manufactures don't provide to their retailers or on their packaging. So, short of contacting the manufacturer, I am not sure how much harder I can look.

Yeah, Ace doesn't have them. Can't get to home depot or lowes cause I have no car. Prob just go the internet route, which sucks, but don't think I have much option at this point.

Look up hardware stores in your phone book or online. They are not that hard to find...Or if you have time, order them online...

There's color temps on every cfl I've ever bought. If it's not on the package, it will be stamped on the base of the lamp itself. Sometimes you need a magnifying glass to read it, so take one to the store. RR

hmmm this is proving to be more difficult than I thought. Just got back from the hardware store again. I honestly read the whole package don't see any references to color temp except for on the 2700k bulbs. I think i'll just get the ones that say "daylight." They are probably the best bet...
Thanks for your help, all !
PS Bio thats a good deal. ebay maybe. I am not giving it to the internet monster yet though...

I saw that one at my Home Depot, was thinking about getting it. And since we're on the subject, here's another question about the 6500k bulbs: since they're meant to simulate natural daylight, do I need them if I expose my fruiting chambers or monotubs to ambient light in the day time...?
