I have a trip room. Trippy lights are a must, even if it is just the basics. I have been collecting lots of different ones for about 3 years so I think I got a good collection. Rather than having a stereo its lots more fun to have a computer if possible. Lots of toys too glow sticks and moonballs and things like that. Sometimes I like to to go toy store just to get trip toys.
The last three places I have lived I put tons of those little glow in the dark stars, planets, moons and shooting star stickers all over the ceiling. That has always made me feel like I am at a planeterium show. Lots of pillows lying around instead of furniture that way you can have lots more room to move around and play.

"computer with trippy winamp vizuals could be cool!"
Yeah it is fun to load up a playlist and just watch all the diiferent visuals.

Well thats what is in our trip room and I love it, we always have fun.
Here is one pic of my liquid light projector and butterfly mobile.

Paint the whole thing a pretty ugly, but not fruity looking, dark purple.

put black light sensative paint all over the walls, and put alot of trippy posters up

Get some bean bags, put up some Christmas lights that can be both set to random and set to various patterns.

Get a nice stero, or computer, get a TV and a video game system.

and get a projector, so you can put water on it and watch it on the walls.

Damn that would be an awesome trip/smoke out room.

Make the room totally black, buy 10 strobe lights and prepare for epilepsy
Bad idea

Nice hippy colors on the wall. Trippy lights, I love trippy lights I have a small collection. The lava lamp, liquid projector and plasma globe are the best.
It would also be cool to embed an aqaurium in the wall. Make sure it's made of strond glass or plastic so you can't break it to free the fish when you're tripping
Good heating is also important, you don't want it to get cold. Some interesting posters.
The best would be to have one partly white wall with a video projector pointing on it. Then you could project huge winamp visualisations on the wall.

Plants! Some kind of potted tree, little bamboos, hanging ferns... At least one live houseplant of some kind gives any room a better 'vibe'.

No TV, computer, video games, phone, etc- but a good stereo- with surround speakers preferably, is a must. 2 turntables, a mixer, and several boxes of vinyl would be nicer, but not everyone's got that stuff.

Some nice Turkish/ Persian/ Chinese rugs, and one of those large patterned sheets to hang on the ceiling. If you can find weird paintings, tapestries, sculptures, masks etc. to hang on the walls, (flea markets, thrift stores, Chinatown gift shops, etc...) they will be cooler to look at than blacklight posters, which to me are kind of an adolescent stoner cliche.

Lots of different light sources each with low-wattage bulbs- colored paper lantern-type shades would be nice.

Simple instruments are cool to have- bongos, didgeridoo, etc.

A big hookah that just 'lives' in that room would be nice too.

Beanbags have already been mentioned and are a great idea. So are futons, and big pillows. The circular, wicker-bamboo chairs are great. Used to have one with christmas lights wrapped around the circumference... Those vibrating recliners are excellent, too.

I'd also go with what a friend of mine did:
he has a bedsheet with a pattern of the night sky on it.
He hung it up on the wall, only pinned at the top.
On a shelf on the other side of the room, a oscillating fan points at it.
It sways lightly in the breeze, and can entrance you for hours/an eternity, blacklight underneath.

My bedroom is essentially a trip room. I have a blacklight, a strobelight, some trippy posters(some of them are blacklight posters), some trippy pictures I made using pen and hilighter(so they glow under the blacklight), some rave flyers, a great stereo system, a keyboard, and my acoustic guitar.

Xibalba has the same idea that I do. A nice earthy and comfortable environment is k3y.
Blacklight posters can be fun, but they are a little tacky when the blacklights are turned off and you arent tripping (I have one). If it is a strictly "tripping" room, I guess blacklight posters are good. I have a couple of liquid light projectors that are awesome. you can change out the colored liquid slide for different color patterns, and the projectors hide easily. Houseplants are a must, just imagine a whole wall of vines while tripping!!!  textured wall paint or well patterned wallpaper would be nice as well. Your trip room should defenatly have stuff in it that you like. Bring your dog in there with you, that would be fun, especially if it is playful. I have a couple of ferrets that are fuckin hilarious to watch and play with. animals are amazing.

Take a bunch of white sheets and hang them from the ceiling, draping down as though they were walls, Create a maze and sew the sheets together at the corners so that yourslef and others, actually have to walk through the maze, as opposed to cheating. The stimulation from this is incredible, adding strobe lights and laser lights at your discretion, in the midpoint of the maze have a comfy chair so you can relax and enjoy your creation, only to get lost on your way out. Art work or mirrors help if scattered or strategically placed.. Enjoy the moment.

Make sure your room has good ventilation, if not, then get an Air Conditioner. The great thing about A/C is you can have it at a constant temperature.
It'd be cool to be able to have a clear roof for your trip room, so you can see the stars at night, or let the moonlight in.
Cover the floor in comfy cushions, bean bags, etc. So basically you can lie anywhere, and you could leap around and have a soft landing everywhere.
Get a GREAT stereo. I mean, not your standard stereo, but something that will let you feel every tiny bass note ripple through your body. A normal stereo is good, but it just gets a whole lot more insane when you can feel the music flow inside your body. Another idea would be to sound proof the room to the max, so no matter what time it is, you can crank tunes up! Handy if you live in an area where the neighbours are quite close and they complain about noise.

Personally I really dont like black lights, neon colours, and certianly not strobe lights! Hang lots of tapestries on the walls, a soft couch, a table for writing and sitting under and playing with sculpy. Put the lights on a dimmer switch. Get a shag carpet, a turkish hookah, a locking door (but not tricky to unlock.) Big fat candles. A fish tank full of exotic saltwater corals.

Oops, I hadn't read xibalba's post, which is very similar to mine. I second the sculpture initiative. If you're in the Richmond VA area I would proudly make you a sculpture or give you one my own own.

You should ask a child this question, I find that I have a very child like mindset while I trip, lots of exploring and hiding and wedging myself into small spaces.

tell you what...

about that extra room... here's what we do: i live there (free of course). in return, i keep cakepans full of straw\poo fruiting constantly and via wallpaper, posters, lighting, furniture, plants, tapestries, and books, turn the room into a vehicle for psychedelic voyaging. no?

A PC, hooked up to a projector. Then you could have WinAmp and MilkDrop visualzations blown up huge on the wall or ceiling. Add a disco ball above and the whole room would be alive!

The ultimate trip room? Hmm.

Well, do you know how to install recessed lighting? How good are you with remodeling and sheetrock?

IMO, you'd need a disco ball/strobe light in the center of the room. In a strategic location, you could place a fog machine. Having laser-lights pointing from all corners of the room down to the opposite corner, will create sort of a 3d "X" effect that'll be quite cool.

If you're an artist, or can hire an artist, paint your walls with blacklight paint in designs. you could just splash it around, but that doesn't always turn out great. You could also use stencils or something, and just generally doodle and have fun doing it. two low-voltage black-lights on opposite walls of the room, 6' up, center. On other two walls, put posters or whatever.

A projector is a cool thing to have, especially if you can hook it up to a (silently running) computer and run visualizations on the walls.

To have more flexibility, install track lighting and have spotlights pointed wherever you want... it seems cool to go with sort of a "circle" theme... have spotlights pointed down at the beanbags, not so that it blinds the person but so that it highlights them....

Switches are up to you.. I'd put them all at 44", just because any weird location is gonna be extra-weird when tripping. Just a simple on-off switch for the lights, and perhaps a dimmer. If there's going to be moisture in your trip room at all, make sure any outlets are GFI. It'd be good to keep some outlets in the room just for expansion purposes, but I'd put an outside cover on them.. so they're harder to open and you can't accidentally shock yourself.

Something nobody has mentioned yet is the ground ... You may want to keep it simple and stick to carpet, but there's always the option of something a little more freaky.

Stick with me here. Okay, so build a box frame, and fill it with mcdonalds-style balls. Mount chairs above the balls in corners of frame, with easy-access climbing. Drink holders optional.

LOL, of course.. This is mostly all pointless since we don't know the dimensions of the room we are planning for. Do you have blueprints, Alynaria?

i'd have to make my whole house a trip room...but if it were limited to one room, i'd just make sure there were plenty of cool things in there to keep you occupied. like nice things to look at...especially pictures on the wall to take away the blandness.  nice deep soft carpet to lay on and look at the pictures.  i have a huge rug with paisley designs all over it hanging on my wall.  it reminds me of a fractal at times.  one of my favorite things to do while coming down and feeling wierd is to just lay  on my soft carpet, all stretched out, and watch this rug on my wall.  it's beautiful.  i must take a picture of it for an example!

you definitely need things pleasing to your eyes.  things you like.  things to play with, tv to watch, maybe a video game.  surround sound would be cool for movies.  in my opinion, flashing lights and all that is a little overboard.  lights that you are able to dim are nice.  fake plants are cool...everything is cool!  just fill the room up with everything!

This is an idea I just thought of , paint a window on one wall and paint it to where you look out the window and you are looking at the forest and maybe have some critters hanging out in the woods to . People will look out the window and thingk they are actually looking in to the forest . Or you can do the city thing with lots of buildings and lights .

A normal stereo is good, but it just gets a whole lot more insane when you can feel the music flow inside your body. Another idea would be to sound proof the room to the max, so no matter what time it is, you can crank tunes up! Handy if you live in an area where the neighbours are quite close and they complain about noise.

If you have the money for this it is an awesome idea. For those with lesser funds try just buying a discman possibly with MP3 then you can just listen pretty much as loud as you want and it doesn't bother anyone. I know you can't 'feel' the base but for the price difference it's an ok option.

Also you gain the mobility aspect which means you can pretty much go whereever you want (outside exploring) and you will be taking the music with you.

well, i've got a pretty trippy room.

the walls are grey but covered in fluorescent posters of weed and an alien holding mushies out (u have to see it to believe it, it's amazing).

i've got some lava lamps, shag carpeting, my bed (it's pretty damned big), a small balcony so i can immers myself high above nature without getting lost (this is awsome because the really tall trees for like a little dome overhead).

i also have my comp which runs drempls, which is by far the trippyist thing on earth.

not to mention a 5.1 surroundsound system on a soundblaster live card. if u turn on the DREAM effect u can control how the bass, trebel and vocals swirl from speaker to speaker so it's really fun.

basically my room is really colorful and interactive.

hope u find some of these idea's usefull... it was pretty low cost...even the computer because i slapped it together myself.

peace

Ummm I can think of 2 things that I really love when tripping.

1) a Large Aquarium with Piranhas. When you feed them whilst tripping it is so intense. You can feel them stalking the prey and then they just attack and dont stop untill it is gone! Once the fish get big you can get the feeder mice from the pet store for a wild show!

2) A Pinball Machine. My friend has a Tommy Pinball Machine and it is the best toy you could ever have when tripping, all the crazy lights and sounds from it are wild!

Paint the sky on the floor with fluorescent blue and white paint.

Wall to wall mirrors on all walls creating the illusion that the room is of infinite size.

putting together everyones ideas that I liked...

okay for the floor, you put our huge cushons, each covering 1/4 of the floor, in the little space in the center have a hooka. then, on the sides fo the room, on one end have a sterio, and on the other end a computer, both on the floor. from three feet above the floor to the celing will be a bunch of those furry things so when you stand up, you feel like you are in an ocean of fur. Also, when you lie down it will feel like the ceiling is three feet high.

Hmm, actually, I'm an electrician.

When I grow up and become rich, I'm going to build me a football-field sized mcdonald balls holder. Actually, wait, I think if you could fill the mcdonalds balls with varying levels of some kind of waterproofed sand-like sustance, they would have different boyancy and would float at different heights .. imagine doing a backflip into a sea of mcdonalds balls and lukewarm water. Mmmm. Ouch. Yeah, that might hurt.

i'd seriously like to build a room that was a huge ball. No flat edges at all. I'd paint it all black, install black lights only, and use a super soaker to paint a spiral pattern on the ball from top to bottom with laundry detergent so it would only glow under the black light. I'd also like to have aliens there if possible.

My friend has an INSANE sound system. It's all bose, cost just under 9 grand for everything (harman kardonn equilizer thingy, a big fucking plasma TV, and a 110 disc changer and a shitload of surround sound speakers)

when we trip at his house and listen to juno reactor, your veins move from the bas

I would cover a wall with clippings from newspapers and magazines, posters and flyers all over lapping and layering - but not tape every edge down so that as a fan would blow across it the pictures would gently, gently ripple - and soft lighting over all, with POINTS of brightness behind some pillows or behind the drapes - and lots of phrases

paste magazine ads to a fishtank and cut the eyes out of the people in the pictures : ):)

(i like the idea of the world beyong/within/behind etc)

and a good stereo with the option of headphones is a good idea, definately connected to a computer

ceiling decorations definately, including fabric drapped from floor to ceiling (also affected by the fan)
mmmmmm comfy + play + mysterious + sensuous....

damn! i really wish I was in that room!

Dudes! I can totally concur! I designed a haouse that has one room that is totally mirrors, and another that is totally furry and pillowy. (Well i was 15 at the time, grin, but maybe someday)

But about that liquid light projector, it rocks and you can buy it as well as other cool groovy stuff for a trip room, cheaper than anywhere! check out http://www.buyistuff.com/groovy_gadgets.htm It's the walmart of Groovy!

There's also cool stuff like inverted disco balls, the original lava lamps, and the new lava plasma lamp among other things you've never seen before, or perhaps have.
Peace Out
