Pasteurizing coir in a sweater box?
    #14050407 - 03/01/11 06:49 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Anybody pasteurize in a sweater box? you know, the same tubs that i would turn into a monotub.

im thinking i would boil water, then add the coir in the pot, then transfer this to a sweater box and cover.

i would think pouring near boiling temperature melt the plastic on the bottom.
has anybody tried this before? because i would rather not waste a good tub because of hot water:mad:

Near boiling temperature will sterilize the coir which will in turn possibly lead to trichoderma or another green mold. You should just get a five gallon bucket w/ lid. Punch a few holes in the lid with a nail. Then put the coir in the bucket with 3.5 quarts of water that is 170 degrees. This way you stay in the 135-175 degree range you want to be in. You'll need a thermometer for that. Pour the water in the bucket with a brick of coir, 2 quarts verm, and 2 cups gypsum. Snap the lid. The next day its ready to spawn.

The thermometer is key. So you don't over heat the water.
