What % colonized before casing layer
    #14047972 - 03/01/11 11:08 AM (13 years, 4 days ago)

Is it better to put the casing layer on once the tray is at %100, or to do it around %90.

100 seems like it would really give the bottom a chance to set up, but 90 seems like it would still give the bottom time to colonize and eliminate any chance of early pinning.

Which is better? Also, is 1in a good depth for 4 in of substrate? Thinking of making a little extra casing and patching the first few spots that show.

90% Is what I've read from some of RR's old posts, but I never use a casing layer. You don't really need it as much unless you're fruiting straight grain.

I'm hoping the casing layer helps holds the humidity high against the myc.

Might try sticking some wax paper / plastic sheeting over it until the pins show. Only place I'm getting a good pinset is on the sides.

100% works.  If it is cubes I would skip the casing but that is just me some people like to case when conditions are not ideal but cubes do not need a casing layer.
