moldy coffee grounds

so when i went to starbucks to get my coffee grounds they gave me a huge garbage bag full. i made one batch of substrate then left the bag of grounds out on my porch for about 2 weeks. Today i went to make another batch of sub and when i opened up the bag of grounds i noticed it had a white mold growing on it. i tried to move away all the contaminated grounds and use what didn't appear to have mold on it, and after mixing the sub i loaded it into jars and am PC'ing for 1 hour. will this be sufficient to kill all the contam or should i just make a new batch of substrate?

u shouldnt pc your substrate
ive had cobweb mold grow on my coffee and i still used it with great results
it seems that pasteurizing was enough to kill the cobweb in my case

cause it kills the good bacteria and you will increase the likelyhood of contam
you pc your grains
and pasteurize your substrates
shit
you dont even need to pc your grains if you dont mind steaming them for a very very long time
but ya
definately dont pc your bulk substrates
just get to field capacity and bring to 140-160 degrees for 1-2 hours and you are good to go
watch RRs videos for tips on how to do that or UTSE

Toss that moldy stuff out. Would you eat food that had been partly digested by your dog and then puked onto the carpet? If not, why feed it to your mushrooms?
Next time, dump the grinds out and spread them in the sun to dry. Once dry, you can keep them forever. RR

What I do is to collect my spent espresso grounds in a container that I keep in the freezer at -18°C until I am going to use them and then I take them out right before mixing them into the substrate and pasteurizing them. Always worked for me.

Neither do I. A few quarts every other month will suit me nicely. I only use coffee grounds as a supplement in little more than trace amounts.

thanks for the input guys, i didn't realize that the substrate contained beneficial bacteria i always assumed you wanted it sterile like everything else in order to prevent contam. i figured people pasteurized because it's easier for larger quantities. storing coffee grounds in the freezer is a good idea too, next time ill do that, hopefully they wont give me such a ridiculously huge amount next time.

I was doing some reading and from what I've read bulk subs like Hpoo contain beneficial bacteria but coir most likely does not and therefore PC'ing coir substrate should be fine. However i do want to try to pasturize my next batch of substrate but i cant find a good tek, can someone please link one for me?

Just follow the horse manure tek and video clip. The full tek is on the DVD but the sample clip lets you know what to do to get started. Keep the mixture at 140F for sixty to ninety minutes. RR
