they are so evolutionarily adapted, I hardly didn't even see them because they blend in so well. These things are literally covering multiple pots of lettuce.
bugs circled in red.

Those are Common Aphids. Spray them with insecticidal soap to kill 'em.

Or you can go natural about it and just buy some ladybugs. They will eat the aphids.

You got Aphids bro.
Soap on lettuce isn't om nom nom. It's ok if you wash it but I prefer to:
Take a lighter to them. Just a quick lick of the flame and their legs singe off and they die. Kinda fun too!
Or you can manually squash them to keep numbers down.
Or, you can use a jet of water to squirt them off.
Another cool one is too squash them and rinse your fingers in a tub of water. Use this water to spray on the plant. No critters like to hang around the smell of their own species decaying and they'll move on.
Aphids are mostly seasonal and I don't think you should trash you lettuce yet. If you do you'll probably find they just move to a different plant. Keep an eye on the numbers, do your best to keep them low to none. Also check other plants in your garden for Aphids. They attack fresh new growth.
Roses are great plants at catching Aphids, they're like Aphid magnets and having a few of these around can save them from attacking your prized plants. This is a tip I picked up from the viticulture industry.
