For those interested in expanding your mind.
    #14049856 - 03/01/11 05:21 PM (13 years, 4 days ago)

http://webcast.berkeley.edu/course_details_new.php?seriesid=2011-B-16066|2011-B-74124&semesterid=2011-B

The above link goes to the ongoing 2011 UC Berkeley class "Scientific approaches to consciousness".

I hope this turns out to be fun and informative for everyone.

+ 5 to anyone willing to watch them over the next couple weeks/as they come out, and discuss with me. I will begin watching at the rate of 1-2 per day starting tomorrow.

The first one deals mostly with syllabus and whatnot, but offers up some great resources for reads on the study of consciousness.

There is also a good course on Biological anthropology as well. If anyone is interested I can link to it.

SLIGHTLY OFFTOPIC RANT ENGAGE!

P.S. I do not attend any college/university. I find the idea of "paying $150,000 for an education you can get for $1.50 in late charges at the public library" fucking appalling. I guarantee you I am more qualified to work most jobs as an autodidact, than most people WITH degrees. Hell, that SCREAMS initiative. The fact that I can prove myself knowledgeable and gained the knowledge through my own means proves resourcefulness, and hard work. I think my point is that you should be hired based on ability, and knowledge, not on how much money you spent on your fancy piece of paper.

Education should be provided to everyone, FREE, like these webcasts, only public, by the rest of the goddamn species, instead of this massive money siphon that they've become for private institutions. It only serves to further decimate the US's middle class.

That is a complete bullshit, made up argument.  A bachelor degree does not cost anywhere close to that.  Mine cost slightly less than $20k and there is no possible way that I could have learned what I did from the library and internet.

This is for one years tuition.

Also notice the quotation marks. It is a quote. As in not said by me.

Besides, you think 20,000 is cheap? Tell that to the people with a BA's everywhere working at McDonald's, now in debt because they went and couldn't find a job in their respective fields.

As far as whether you could have leaned it or not, that's debatable. The desire to seek knowledge is what gets it for you. I guarantee you for every college class, there is someone out there willing to teach it to you for free. Just gotta look. Doesn't mean it isn't easier to pay for it all the time.

But, digression aside, it was me ranting, and in spoiler tags. Anyone actually interested in the course posted?

Im not really.  There is alot of stuff to consume on the web, and watching/listening takes so much longer than reading.  Plus I have my own classes to do, I dont need more.  What is so great about these that I should listen to them?

I don't want to drag this further off topic, but no, different things. A Ferrari is material, education isn't. My whole point is that there should be no monetary value assigned to education. Please don't pick at an obscure quote I used to simply get a point across.

Harvard teachers still teach from books. Any rich prick can go to Harvard and get a piece of paper. It takes a scholar to seek education.

I just wanted to present people with an opportunity to get a scholastic perspective on consciousness. I doubt everyone here has the desire to seek out bits and pieces of info on the net and cobble together the massive amounts of info contained in the lectures.

If you aren't interested, move on. I'm sure there are other threads that could hold your attention better. Might I suggest this post, judging by your name.

I found college to be a great place to get laid.  I got my $20,000 worth. The education ,if you can call it that was icing on the cake.

Didn't know that, what's the catch? And yes, know about scholarships. I actually get free tuition which I will take advantage of for being a ward of the state as a teenager.

I just hate the BS system, but AGAIN, That's not what I made this thread for. I just included my opinion because I felt like voicing it, and didn't want to clutter up the boards with another thread. I WILL get a degree, but I don't support the idea of one, and I imagine anyone who has had to spend lots of money on one will defend it to the death.

I will no longer participate in this argument. Feel free to talk about the courses or something related though.  :jacked:

Are you really that paranoid?  You can learn a helluva lot in college, and there is no conspiracy in place to prevent this.  There might certainly be obstacles in place as far as publishing papers whose subject material and results go against the common grain (such as those dealing with parapsychology, psychedelics, etcetera) but this restriction is getting more and more lax as the years go by IMO.

uhh there is no catch. If you're poor and you get in, it's free. That's it.
