the minute humans gained conscious awareness on the intense level that we have (and it's always been increasing), we took direct control of evolution.
What evidence do you use to support this claim?
Don't think of evolution in humans as a literal physical changes, think of evolution in the human species -- cures for diseases, efforts to cut back on pollution....we invented all of these.
And why did we invent them? In order to stay alive? No species wants to die. A species wouldn't last if there wasn't a drive to survive. That has been true since the beginning of life as far as anyone can tell. Not much choice required, we're born with this drive to survive.
They came from our brains, and they've only been increasing the standards of living throughout the world -- how is this NOT evolving?
It is evolving. But it isn't necessarily something we are going to actively choose against. It's a reaction to the pressures of our environment, same as all animals react to changes in the environment. If a forest becomes overcrowded and resources limited, the animals living there will have to come up with a solution or perish. Humanity is no different. Sometimes the changes cannot be dealt with by a species and so the species perishes. That could happen to humanity as well. We may not be able to keep up with our population over the long term. Although I suspect that we would start killing each for the limited resources before we'd let any morality we've invented get in the way.
I do agree that some approaches to our world are better than others, but I don't really think it's a choice. One of our strong suits is in predicting, but it's still a very limited ability. I can predict what the outcome of our current consumption will be, but that doesn't make it true at all. A single aspect of technology could change and make my entire prediction based on false information. That's just the nature of the beast. We're always trying to react to limited resources and limited abilities, just like all other animals. The name of the game is survival, always has been. Not much of a choice, it's part of who we are. If we didn't have a will to survive as a species, we wouldn't have been around even this long.
