Ive been out of the hobbie for a while. But im about to start up again but i have a Q. I always used wild bird seed before. Now im gonna try rye berries. So my Q is. I never soaked my bird seed. I see that everyone says to saok grains. Is that always needed for rye or can i do it without the soak?

Soaking helps germinate endospores so that they may be killed during the pressure cooking process. i generally soak for 6 to 12 hours, then simmer for 10 minutes to obtain proper hydration, rinse and load up into jars.

Soaking is mainly to hydrate the grains slowly so they don't burst open and spill their starch. You might find the grain preparation video clip helpful. RR

If your PCin at 15 psi. 70 mins should b enough. Size of cooker shouldnt matter. I never had any problems wit cont. with that time and psi.

What doulovebeef said is still very true, especially if you soak in water that is initially hot. It triggers the germination of bacterial endospores which are not easily killed in the dormant state, even by pressure cooking. I use organic rye berries as grains exclusively, always soak and I can't remember the last time I had a single contaminated jar.
