Daimon's coir tek and big tub - way too dry (pics)

Used Daimon's Coir tek to make substrate for a 50 gallon tub. Mixed it with spawn and checked it on the 10th day. It was about 80% colonized, however dry as a bone! As in, so dry that the substrate had pulled away from the sides of the bin! I gave it a thorough misting and then placed the cover back on until it was at 100%. Checked it 2-3 days later and it was a little better but still dry, so I misted it again. It's about 2 days since that last misting. Should I keep opening it and misting it or what? Every time I open it C02 escapes and that hurts colonization, but at the same time it's so dry! I even used a little more water than the tek asked for. Thoughts?

Where did the moisture go? Do you have a lid on this thing, tape over the holes, etc.? It's not magic...if you had the coir at field capacity when you mixed the tub, the moisture had to have evaporated somehow.

I'm assuming the mycelium used it to grow?
The tub has a cover on it, snapped down. And tape over all of the holes.

Well if you used 4-4.5 quarts that should be plenty. You will loose some during the boiling phase and also during the pasteurization phase if your bucket of choice lets steam out. I used 4 quarts on my current project and had great results so far

maybe pics of your set up would help? seems like it has to have evaporated out through some hole or something

It's literally just a huge 50 gallon brown rubbermade tub with 40 quarts of substrate and 16 quarts of spawn.
This thread really isn't about blaming the tek, but to ask for what I should do to rectify the situation and go forward.

What type of coir brick did you use? That tek is based on eco earth, if you used something larger it could be drier than what it would normally be.
As for moving forward, wait until the tub is 100% colonized and then dunk the substrate before the first flush.
10 Gallons of substrate? Four gallons of spawn? You really put a whole lot into that tub.

Yep! It's hard to see because the tape is under the hand grips.

There has to be a missing factor here, something your not telling us. It sounds like you had that thing sealed up pretty god, its almost defying the laws of physics for that thing to dry out that bad......What was the temp for colonization?

yea but the tek wasn't written for a 50 gallon tub either... The moisture content could be thrown off due to the actual amount of sub... Idk just a thought as to why this could have happened... But yea I agree with keep doing what your doing every 3-4 days and then once 100% give it a dunk and that should set you straight...

Well the lid is a little loose. I mean, it's snapped down but it's not really snug or anything.
Temp was about 70-75.

Haha, finding a way to dunk this monster may prove to be a challenge!

non sense... take the thing to a place with a drain or put over your bath tub. After you have securely taped up all the holes up to a few inches above your sub and then proceed to add water until its clearly over saturated your sub and let sit for 5-6 hours... then un tape the holes and let drain for an hour or two and then return to fruiting...

Dunk it dude!
I know it sounds weird, but if its really that dry, it needs a lot of moisture and it needs it quick. So fill the tub with water (distilled of course) up to the top of the substrate. The whole substrate chunk will try to float, so you need to put a plate or something smooth thats clean on top, and a heavy clean weight on top of that to keep it submerged. Leave it be for at least 24 hours. After 24 hrs has passed, take a peek at the sub, does it look saturated? if you still think its a little dry, then keep it submerged for 12 more hours. After the 12 hours, just drain out the remaining water and let it be, and make sure it stays really humid inside that tub and make sure there are no standing pools of water, just moisture that resembles a cool mornings dew.

With a tub this big, and being that dry, 5-6 hours wont saturate it enough. Heck, little PF cakes get dunked for 12-24 hours. Plus, colonized medium takes a lot longer to absorb water that uncolonized sub.

I respectfully disagree with a 12-24 hour dunk....I think that dunking for 5-6 hours is a great idea, not for 12-24. If its the same depth as a normal tub sub then follow the same directions for dunking a normal tub. Just because it has a larger length and width doesn't mean you should dunk it longer, it will take almost the same amount of time to hydrate.... Put a bunch of water in it using your bath tub and weigh it down with something so that it stays under water...May have to tip that bad boy a few times in all directions to get the water drained out
Took a few edits to get this post right but oh well...

Do you guys think this is colonized enough to put into fruit conditions after dunking? It's been colonizing for 13 days.

I say give it another 3 days after another heavy misting and then possibly dunk if growth continues enough...

I'd let it go for a few more days.
For bulk dunking the 4-6 hours is ideal.
Distilled or tap will work. ( If you don't like your tap go with distilled to ease your mind )
If it's so dry you can tell a noticeable difference in the weight, then you might want to dunk her. If it's just top portion that looks dry, give it a good misting. Might have to do more and heavier misting depending on how dry it is where you live.
