wow's totally cool experiment has mushrooms!!
    #14049567 - 03/01/11 04:34 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

ok so..  as i start posting here you will notice i may have ways of doing things that are a bit unconventional.  i enjoy experimenting and figuring things out for myself really..  this is a result of that.  i dont really believe this has to be really hard or complicated and i may have stumbled upon a ridiculously easy way to do spawn and test jars..

i was sitting here one day and i remembered i had a LC i started and i was like "oh shit!"  and i really wanted to test it on something however i had no vermiculite for a test jar..  i had brf and i was thinking of things like cardboard or balsa wood and many things..  then it hit me i could use frozen microwavable organic brown rice.. i knew alot of people would have a beef with this because its "too easy"  or whatever and ive seen many threads closed along the topic of using whole rice after searching this forum.  so i didnt even bother asking and i just did it..
heres the rice i used..

this is the pack it comes in..  cook for 3 min on high and it steams the shit out of it..

i cooked it and stuck it in a unsterilized 1/2 pint and put on a plastic cap and cooked it again for 1 1/2 more minutes to steam the whole shebang..  making sure not to burn the rice..

so about a week later it was fully colonized..  and im sitting there lookin at it like "ok now what?"  so...  i thought id take this experiment to the next level and pasteurize me some poopie..  so i grabbed a ziplock and broke down the shit inside the bag..  the bag was like 1 1/2" thick full of poop laid out on the counter..  i then added some gypsum..  idk how much i just crushed some drywall and added a little maybe like 1/4 cup or so..  i then hydrated to field capacity and double bagged the mofo..  making sure to squeeze as much air out as i could, threw it in a mini mate cooler and added some hot boiling water (again from the microwave) into the cooler weighing the bag down with rocks..  the bag blew up pretty quick so i let the air out and re submerged the thing and let it sit for 2 hours..  when i took it out the shit itself was still at 130'F..  i took it out and let it sit for about 8 hours..  when i woke up the next morning i threw the cake inside the bag and mixed it all up inside the bag which was pretty full at that point..  i then used a 2 liter bottle cut in half as a funnel (fits perfect) and put the whole mix inside a one gallon water jug..  heres the pictorial.....

the poop

the stuff..  poo broken up in the bag with drywall..

in teh cooler..  i actually used alot more rocks than this..

pasturized for a couple hours..

my microwave cake!!

inside the bag

mixed it..

just spawned..

coffee filter cap

about 36 hours later!!  woo! ITS ALIVE!!

this is where im at so far..  i totally hope this works and is the birth of WOW'S S.L.A.M.  TEK..  (stupid lazy ass mofo tek)  i shall return with updates as time progresses..

TODAY 12 days 22hrs later...  it has pins!!  :awesomenod:

17 days later!!  my first shroom harvested!!

please discuss and criticize!! :rastamon:

The fact that you have growth is very promising.

What is a "microwave cake"?

The sterilization process makes me wonder. Are you sure this is legit mycelium growth and not some kind of contaminate? Interesting process regardless -- especially the way you pasteurized the poo. Curious to see how this goes.

i made it with that microwavable rice..  just put it in the microwave on a paper plate in its steamer bag and nuke it for 3 minutes and it blows up with steam for a couple minutes..  then i put it in a clean non sterile jar and nuked it again for like another minute anda half to steam the jar out..  use a PLASTIC LID in the microwave!!  it colonized super fast and healthy!!

lol it is indeed healthy mycelium!!  its nice, fluffy, rhizomorphic,  and smells nice and mushroomy!  keep in mind this rice is already semi-pre-cooked and it is steamed hard in the bag in the MW..  i have another new LC im gonna try this on as well..  ill probably do it within the next couple days..  im surprised it worked so well and the sub is colonizing super fast..  its been less than 3 days and its already kicked out from the sub and started colonizing pretty good..  i wasnt gonna post till i finished but i figure what the hell..  if this works..  ANYBODY can grow shrooms!  when it comes down to it,  its just some shit in a bottle!

What are all those little white specks throughout the manure? :justdontknow:

You'd be surprised at what you can get away with. Some people have gotten away with not pasteurizing their manure at all.

The thing I'd be concerned about is that your rice cake thing was not fully colonized at the time of spawning. Exposed uncolonized grain is an open invitiation for trich, mos' def, mang. :whatwhat: Other than that, looks good.

Out of all the things done 'wrong' you could say - although it's an experiment, so I'm not suggesting any wrongdoing is actually occurring - you still pasteurized the substrate, and that's immensely beneficial. If the spawn is reasonably clean, and the manure was basically pasteurized in the appropriate temperature window, it'll probably work out! :super:

Don't fear the fae, man. Keep that in mind. Fuck, feel free to manually fan once a day DURING COLONIZATION. You don't have any sort of passive air/gas exchange system I can see, so yeah, fan away, and peek as often as you want. You'll only be helping speed the colonization process, and DECREASING odds of contamination. :awesomenod:

Dude, this is not fully colonized:

There are obviously visible pieces of grain without any culture on them.

It might still work, though.

You should not simply take off the lid, no. Fan it once or twice a day, should be adequate as it's such a small substrate. Yeah, go ahead and burn some holes in it for fae when the fruiting time comes. :super:

Awee, I was rooting for the OP.

On another note, I've grown on whole brown rice without verm or anything.  I fruited the rice cakes in 2 liter soda bottles.  Cost me like 20$, and I got a decent trip from eating the mushrooms.  I eventually ate the cakes, and got an even better trip than eating the mushrooms.

Obviously there are muuuch better ways to do this, and it was really hard to get the moisture content right with just a couple jars and a microwave.  I only got 2 trips for 20$, which is extremely inefficient.  Could have just bought some mushrooms instead.  But it was fun.
