I used to order from homebrew heaven. They're very reliable, but now Brewstock opened up a couple of miles away from me so I can just drive there. Both of them stock turbo yeast and are reliable.

Why bother with turbo yeast anyway ? Champagne yeast gets a pretty high alcohol content and finishes up fairly quick. I use it whenever I plan on distilling.

Alcohol is methanol, distilling wine makes brandy.
Champagne yeast is $0.50 a pack and produces almost as much alcohol as turbo yeast, it's just a little slower. I've never done a sugar water mash but I read that any wine yeast will work, though some yeast nutrient and crushed up vitamin B tablets will help it out. I don't use turbo yeast because it gives everything a very yeasty flavor and costs 5x as much as wine or champagne yeast.
But if you insist on using turbo yeast, just google the vendor names from my earlier post, they're both very reliable.

Wineos Plain Ol Sugar Wash
by wineo ยป Wed Apr 16, 2008 12:43 pm
I have been working on a simple recipe for a neutral sugar wash without a bunch of extra stuff in it to cause flavors, and this is it.Its real simple.
This is for a 6 gallon wash.
8 pounds of sugar{dissolved in hot water} 1 tsp of citric acid 1 tsp of DAP 1 tsp of gypsum{You can get this from a beermaking supplier} A pinch of epsom salts{Less than 1/8 of a tsp} 1/4 cup of distillers yeast,or 1/2 cup of bakers yeast{sprinkled on top}
Dissolve your sugar in hot water and mix until its dissolved real good.
Add the DAP,gypsum, acid and epsom salts, and stir until its all dissolved.
Add this to your fermenter, and add enough cool water to make 6 gallons.
The starting SG should be 1070-1080SG.Dont go over 1080SG for best results.
Check the temp, and once its 95f or under, sprinkle the yeast on top. After 15-20 minutes, give it a good stir to mix things up,and get some air mixed in.You can cover the fermenter with a cloth,or use an airlock.
Depending on the fermenting temp, this will work off in a week or two. Dont rush it.Let it finish to dryness, and give it another week to clear before running it.
I potstill this wash.It is very neutral, and very clean. It will make a clean neutral, potstilled or refluxed.
By using a large amount of yeast,You dont have to add a bunch of extra neutrents and additives to get it to work, and the less stuff you add,the less it will influence flavors.
All you novice distillers using turbo yeast out there,Try this, and you will be done with turbos, carbon filtering,Etc.

"Brewers make the wort, yeast makes the beer." In high gravity cases you need to do more then just fill the water with fermentables, you need to make the wort as idyllic as possible to not stress the yeast. Ideal pH, temp. and additional nutrients are required to make the yeast happy. The higher you push the yeast, the "happier" the need to be in order to still thrive. Yes, turbo yeast does get higher alcohol. But to reach its potential, you need to nurture it.

I had that backwards.
All drinking alcohol is ethanol no matter what the source. There is also a small amount of methanol mixed in as well and distilling will concentrate it. The key to getting rid of methanol is to throw out the part that comes out of the still first (heads). I have a small 1 gallon still and I throw out the first ounce of anything I distill and that gets rid of all the methanol.

Sort of, when you mess with volumes some odd things can happen in the distilling process in terms of product collected and % purity (especially if your strength of solution differs). I stand by collecting fractions throughout the process in set volumes. That way, you can take a small taste (be sure to spit that methanol out!) and tell where your purest ethanol distilling is happening. If it becomes a standby method with consistent volumes then you'll know if batches go wrong in the future, as the third or forth (or whatever) fraction might taste differently, indicating a difference somewhere down the line of production.
Consistency consistency consistency

I thinks one ounce is overkill and the amount of methanol from one gallon is a lot less, but better safe than sorry.
