Largest earthquake in 35 years hits Arkansas
    #14047338 - 03/01/11 08:12 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

By SARAH EDDINGTON, Associated Press – Tue Mar 1, 12:07 am ET
GREENBRIER, Ark. – The central Arkansas town of Greenbrier has been plagued for months by hundreds of small earthquakes, and after being woken up by the largest quake to hit the state in 35 years, residents said Monday they're unsettled by the increasing severity and lack of warning.
The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the quake at 11 p.m. Sunday, centered just northeast of Greenbrier, about 40 miles north of Little Rock. It was the largest of more than 800 quakes to strike the area since September in what is now being called the Guy-Greenbrier earthquake swarm.
The activity has garnered national attention and researchers are studying whether there's a possible connection to the region's natural gas drilling industry. The earthquake activity varies each week, though as many as nearly two dozen small quakes have occurred in a day.

I see a couple of 2.5-ish quakes on Feb 21 in Arkansas according to USGS:
http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/bulletin/neic_hqbi.html
http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/bulletin/neic_hqbe.html
http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/bulletin/neic_hqau.html
http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/bulletin/neic_hqam.html
They list a depth of 5-6kms though (3.5mi). Is that the usual drilling depth in Arkansas?

It is possible that it could be caused by human influence.  There was a town in Colorado, can't remember the name, that was being plagued by minor earthquakes.  They finally concluded that it was a company was pumping something(waste, water, not sure) down into the ground and it lead to an underground fault line and was the catalyst to all those minor earthquakes.

Found a vid.  Turns out it was Denver.  Interesting video.

We experience this in the north of the Netherlands as well as a result of gas drilling, but the magnitude is always around 1 or so, with an occasional 2 or 2.1 thrown in for good measure.

Oh... so you can see the water shaking in the glass like in the Jurasic
Park movie when the dinosaur is trying to eat everybody, something most
people wouldnt even notice

2.0–2.9 Minor Generally not felt, but recorded. About 1,000 per day
3.0–3.9 Often felt, but rarely causes damage. 49,000 per year (est.)
4.0–4.9 Light Noticeable shaking of indoor items, rattling noises. Significant damage unlikely. 6,200 per year (est.)

I remember an 8,7 magnitude quake that caused no damage, turns out it was
a herd of cows a few meters from the seismograph

Im surprised that with all the massive earthquakes happening around the world california didnt get hit  yet. Im not trying to jinx it though. I live in california. In fact I live next to the san andreas fault

How would massive earthquakes far away effect California's fault?  I dont know much about plate tectonics, but I would think that unless the earthquake was relatively close it wouldnt effect California's fault line.
