- 1969: The Doors "Miami Incident" takes place
Quote:
Miami incident
On March 1, 1969, at the Dinner Key Auditorium in Miami, Florida, The Doors gave the most controversial performance of their career, one that nearly "derailed the band". Morrison had recently attended a play by an experimental theater group, The Living Theatre, and was inspired by their "antagonistic" style of performance art. The auditorium was a converted seaplane hangar that had no air conditioning on that hot night, and the seats had been removed by the promoter in order to boost ticket sales. Morrison had been drinking all day and had missed connecting flights to Miami, and by the time he eventually arrived the concert was over an hour late in starting, and he was, according to Manzarek, "overly fortified with alcohol". The restless crowd of 12,000, packed into a facility designed to hold 7,000, was subjected to Morrison's lack of interest in singing shortly into "Break On Through". Morrison taunted the crowd with messages of both love and hate, saying, "Love me. I can't take it no more without no good love. I want some lovin'. Ain't nobody gonna love my ass?" and alternately, "You're all a bunch of fuckin' idiots!" and screaming "What are you gonna do about it?" over and over again. At one point, Morrison removed and threw the hat of a police officer who was onstage into the crowd and the officer removed Jim's hat and threw it. Manager Bill Siddons recalled, "The gig was a bizarre, circus-like thing, there was this guy carrying a sheep and the wildest people that I'd ever seen". Equipment chief Vince Treanor said, "Somebody jumped up and poured champagne on Jim so he took his shirt off, he was soaking wet. 'Let's see a little skin, let's get naked,' he said, and the audience started taking their clothes off."
On March 5, the Dade County Sheriff's office issued a warrant for Morrison's arrest claiming Morrison deliberately exposed his penis while on stage, shouted obscenities to the crowd, simulated oral sex on guitarist Robby Krieger and was drunk at the time of his performance. Morrison turned down a plea bargain that required The Doors to perform a free Miami concert. He was later convicted, sentenced to six months in jail and ordered to pay a $500 fine. However, Morrison remained free pending an appeal of his conviction, and would die before the matter was legally resolved. In 2007 Florida Governor Charlie Crist suggested the possibility of a posthumous pardon for Morrison, which was announced as successful on December 9, 2010. Densmore, Krieger and Manzarek have denied that Morrison exposed himself on stage that night.

- 1971: The Weather Underground bomb the Capitol building in DC
Quote:
Mar 1, 1971: Bomb explodes in Capitol building
A bomb explodes in the Capitol building in Washington, D.C., causing an estimated $300,000 in damage but hurting no one. A group calling itself the "Weather Underground" claimed credit for the bombing, which was done in protest of the ongoing U.S.-supported Laos invasion.
The so-called Weathermen were a radical faction of the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS); the Weathermen advocated violent means to transform American society. The philosophical foundations of the Weathermen were Marxist in nature; they believed that militant struggle was the key to striking out against the state to build a revolutionary consciousness among the young, particularly the white working class. Their primary tools to achieving these ends were arson and bombing. Among the other targets of Weathermen bombings were the Long Island Court House, the New York Police Department headquarters, the Pentagon, and the State Department. No one was killed in these bombings, because the bombers always called in an advanced warning. However, three members of the Weather Underground died on March 6, 1970, when the house in which they were constructing the bombs exploded.

whoa.. sorry to doors fans who like this show. maybe i'm just missing the point. i dont get it. i like the doors but that is by far the worst live performance i've ever heard. the band is pretty solid but morrison's shouting is totally non-musical to my ear.
maybe the sound quality just sucks and the mix is too vocals-heavy, with jim's voice peaking out and all.. but damn. i would have been pissed off if i had paid to have been in that audience. although the insane spectacle of it all would have made up for the awful performance.

It's hard to say. It depends on your definition of real.

I just have a different taste in music and sense of humor. The fact that it's their worst show is exactly why I like it. It's a beautiful musical train wreck. It's funny, spontaneous, inspirational and funny. It's a real moment. And it's funny.

Oh yeah! You gotta see When You're Strange. It came out a few years ago and is the best Doors documentary. Get it on Netflix! Get the DVD, so you can see all the great extras, including an interview with Jim's father.
FYI, my late step mother claims to have been at the Doors' Miami show. She said she saw Jim's dick. Take that for what it's worth.

I never actually heard that concert before. Jesus christ, that was one massive clusterfuck of a disaster of a show. It's hilarious, and awesome, and terrible, and amazing, and real all at the same time.
I actually really enjoyed when he was on stage just saying stuff, but when he actually "sang" it was almost like he was trying to sing bad on purpose. At times, for a few brief moments he breaks into actual singing and it's clear he can sing just fine, but isn't. He does sound drunk.
I feel really bad for the other band members because they were all playing really well that night. Whenever it goes into a pure instrumental section it's a quality show, but then when Morrison is supposed to sing he misses his cue two or three times and then everything just falls apart. Backdoor man had me laughing all the way through it was so bad, it's almost like he couldn't even remember the lyrics.
For anyone who doesn't know, this is what that concert should have sounded like:

It's great, isn't it? Another interesting thing to think about when listening is that this is the beginning of the end for Jim Morrison and The Doors. The indecent exposure trial and verdict really killed Jim. Sucked all the fun out of being in the band, it seems. My favorite part is "Five To One". Absolutely hilarious and inspiring at the same time.

Yeah, cause most of them only wanted to send a message, not kill people. Apparently they went to great lengths to avoid hurting people.

Interview with Jim about the incident.
Quote:
Salli: Ok…Miami…what was your state of mind when you went into that?
Jim: ……….I think…I was just fed up with the image that had been created around me…which I sometimes consciously, most of the time unconsciously, cooperated with. It just…it got too much for me to really stomach and so I just put an end to it in one glorious evening.
Salli: What is the end result of that going to be?
Jim: Well, I go back…..I had a trial of about six weeks. It was very interesting and the…a..felony rap was dismissed and I’m still stuck with two misdemeanors which could add up to about eight months in jail, but I maintain that I’m………I’m admitting the charge of public profanity, but…a…I’m denying the exposure charge, and so we’re going to appeal that for as…as long as it takes to get it dismissed…..It may take a year or two…I think it was more of a political than sexual scandal. I think they picked on the erotic aspect, because there would really have been no political charge they could have brought against me. It was too amorphous.
Salli: Was there a subversion charge?
Jim: I think that really it was a life style that was on trial more than my specific incident. I guess that what it boiled down to was that I told the audience that they were a bunch of fucking idiots to be members of an audience…you know…what were they doing there anyway? The basic message was…realize that you’re not really here to listen to a bunch of songs by some fairly good musicians. You’re here for something else, and why not admit it and do something about it.
(Jim Morrison interviewed by Salli Stevenson for Circus Magazine. October 13,1970.)
