i tend not to mention spirituality because people get freaked out by the term. regardless ive always been the somewhat weird one of my friends. nowadays people just joke about how i like to philosophize and thats ok with me. i've never wanted to be normal anyway

im just more focused on compassion. i realized while driving home just a bit ago, i love making people happy.
i love it
and love expands and opens the dna strands, rather than contracting it like fear does.

I understand... It's more toward the people who attack me (Or unknowingly, themselves.) that I mirror the same kind of energy back and am aggressive with my knowing.
I guess it depends upon the nature of the lesson.

I definitely prefer the more gentle route of teaching, I think extending things in love and compassion are way better for ones well being. It's like making love versus being blunt with your feelings when they really don't get it, but need to. One needs to be pushed and isn't always pretty... Like what "bad trips" on entheogens teach. The other like making love, the message being conveyed is mutually understood and gently delivered.

ive never been one to be a fast thinker, my retorts could always be better when given more time for thought. ive recently given up on trying to teach people about the fucked up things going on in the world, and why spirituality(especially buddha's words) seems to be the only thing that makes sense to me.

people my age generally just dont care and just want happiness now.
maybe they have the right idea  :raver:

I don't tell people who aren't into spirituality about my mystical dabblings.  What would be the point?

I haven't been outspoken about spiritual matters since I was a naive college kid in the early 70s.

I'm quickly becoming less naive but I am still a college kid.

I think before I was just overwhelmed with what I was aware so that I couldn't help but talk about it.  Nobody around me was seeing what I was seeing so I felt nervously compelled to point out the trainwrecks all around me.

Becoming a prophet of doom, or of nihilism, or one who is simply a nay-saying cynic, pointing out the futility of everyone's rather banal dreams, is not exactly a very spiritual trip. It is better to internalize these perceptions oneself, as they will result in a useful detachment from the world. It would not be possible for me to continuously enter into the attachment based suffering of kids' lives if I didn't have a very real sense of detachment, while at the same time being genuinely sympathetic and empathetic. Part of me ceaselessly feels, "It doesn't matter." If I became emotionally attached to the pain I hear, it would be like trying to save a drowning man by jumping into the water and being pulled down to my own destruction. I need to remain anchored to a solid foundation, and from there to extend a hand to pull him out. Realizing the basic motivations of fear and death anxiety - and all the "Atman Projects" -  the attempts to ensure some fantasy of immortality will help develop dispassion. Children, grandchildren, family businesses, dynasties, and legacies, are all, no more than tombstones. These are the things that could never keep me interested in staying alive. They are little more than the socio-biological imperative to reproduce and bond into family units. Wolves and other mammals do the same. Of all these games, there is what Robert DeRopp called The Master Game. It is the only game that has kept me in the game of life.

That reminds me of Ram Dass' talk of balancing burning compassion with cold intellect.

IME, Spirituality does not improve life, it derails it; at first anyway.
Spirituality isn't about mastering the game, it's about finding the Exit.

Yeah, I'm sure his clarification on what goes on inside is a part of my own intellect. He was very influential in my life. Being an INTP and a 'King of Hearts' (Susan Zannos' Enneagrammatic Type), which describes 'the intellectual aspect of the Emotional Center,' based on Gurdjieff''s work, probably makes me temperamentally suited for what I do, if I break down the ratio of heart and mind systematically.

It ain't my issue if they lack objectivity.

I guess it all the depends on the way you say it and when you say it, you have to time it right if you are going to speak about your spiritual pursuits or philosophies. For example you can't smoke meth and then speak to your friends about doing "right". It just doesn't happen that way.

I have learned my lesson of letting others know your business. Im sure there are people to speak to about these things but they are rare and you will not find them in bars. I try to keep my words and my pursuits to myself nowadays. My family doesn't need to know and my friends don't need to know. I find my life is much simpler that way. By the way why talk to people about things you yourself do not really know? The best teaching i have ever heard has been to "keep quiet", i can see now why many masters of our time have said it, because in reality we know jack Sh*T.

I get this all the time, whenever i explain anything lengthy to anyone they space out, i've learned to find it slightly funny though, better than making them tense up

Strangely enough, I'm the only one who thinks I'm spiritual. I don't follow any specific variety of spirituality, but I do consider myself spiritual in the sense that I'm constantly searching, questioning, and trusting my intuition.

What I perceive as 'being spiritual' my family and friends interpret as being some form (or combination) of being: immature, aloof, hippy-ish, idealistic, romantic, quixotic, esoteric, and occultish.

It's like my spirituality is hiding out in plain sight.

This has been happening to me a lot more often as of late. I'm open to the idea of discussing spirituality with other like minded people but have a hard time explaining it to curious family members/friends. I freeze up and mutter out some half coherent response. Maybe that is a reflection of my own doubts about my spiritual practice.

A quote from the "Cookbook For A Sacred Life" section of Be Here Now:

"Ramakrishna points out that when a tree is very small we protect it by surrounding it with a fence so that the animals do not step on it. Later when the tree is bigger it no longer needs the fence. Then it can give shelter to many."
