any abinsthe distillers?
    #14046052 - 02/28/11 11:13 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I've really been getting into absinthe- I just love the "sativa version of alcohol" kind of drunk it gives-and from what I've been reading all the best swiss and french onces just distill some fairly basic mash recipes, so I figured I'd give it a try

Anyone done it before? Any tips or recipes? I'm pretty sure I've seen a jade recipe that's supposed to be a pernod fils original recipe, and it shouldn't be too hard to at least find a swiss clandestine recipe, right?

btw if you don't know much about absinthe yet, still think it makes you trip, or are just curious, here's some of my favorite absinthe sites
http://www.absintheonline.com/acatalog/Absinthe.html has some good absinthe at good prices
and wormwoodsociety.org good reviews
and http://www.alandia.de/ has some cool stuff like coca absinthe and some cool spoon and fountains n stuff

but here's a video about the awesome Jade distillery

Spanish Absinthe (called "Absenta") never was outlawed in Spain like the French/Swiss Absinthes were in the early 1900s, so it continued to evolve for over a hundred years more.

Absenta typically uses somewhat different herbs, in concentrations that are usually smaller than those in the classic French/Swiss Absinthes. A benefit of the latter is that Spanish Absenta is more suitable for the bigger still, as it uses lesser amounts of herbs. It also means that it is less likely to produce hangovers when taken to excess. Here's how you do it:

------------------------------------------------------------------

ABSENTA VERDE - a Spanish verte absinthe
approx. 55% alcohol

required:

12 grams star anise
8 grams green anise (aniseed)
6 grams fennel
4 grams wormwood herb
2 grams angelica root
1 grams coriander

and also:

3 grams lemon balm (melissa)
2 grams hyssop

and also:

1.5 liters 40% alcohol (flavorless vodka)

preparation:

1..Grind the 6 maceration herbs into a powder
2..Put the herbal powder in the 1.5 liter 40% alcohol and shake well
3..Let this stand in the dark for 12-24 hours (overnight)
4..Pour the alcohol with the wet herbs into your still
5..Distill off one liter of condensate (warning: flammable)
6..Reduce the melissa + hyssop to a powder
7..Put the herbal powder into the liter of distillate and shake well
8..Let this stand in the dark for 12-24 hours (overnight)
9..Pour the Absenta through a coffee filter-paper to filter it
10.Store your liter of Absenta Verde at least two months to ripen

------------------------------------------------------------------

Can it be any easier? Not with a REAL Absinthe. If you want counterfeits yes it can be much easier, but it won't be a high-end Absinthe.

If you do it like this and do it well, you get an Absinthe you would pay an easy $75/liter for in a shop, but only for a fraction of the price.

----------------------------------------------

I decided to loosely emulate a recipy for a historic absinthe found in this document from 1908 called Absinthe d'Pontarlier.

It is a "Holy Trinity" absinthe, in that it consists chiefly of the three herbs Wormwood, Aniseed and Fennel. It is extremely basic in composition, so easy to get right as a beginning absinthe distiller.
Here's how I did it:

----------------------------------------------------------

ABSINTHE D' PONTARLIER

25 grams Wormwood
50 grams Aniseed
50 grams Fennel

this was steeped in 1.5 liters of 47% alcohol overnight

in the wok still it was distilled to draw off 900ml
(aim was to draw off a liter)

----------------------------------------------------------

This resulted in a clear absinthe of 68% alcohol (87% yield) which can be drank as is, or colored with herbs.

I chose to prepare a glass of absinthe as it is now.

25ml Absinthe d'Pontarlier was mixed with 75ml sugarwater of ten percent.

Immediately a louche became appearant, which over the minutes gradually deepened until the glass became fully opaque with cloudiness.

Despite that I had cut some corners the absinthe has a really nice flavor, quite strong but not overly so, which lingers for a long time.
The inebriation is equally pleasant.

To think this is fresh from the still, and hasn't ripened yet!

-----------------------------------------------------

If you want to give your absinthes something extra, add 5-10ml pharmaceutical grade glycerin (brewing store) to each liter of prepared Absinthe. The longer your Absinthe has ripened, the better the taste becomes. In the second recipe, which is traditional, its permissible to reduce aniseed and fennel from 50gr to 25gr so you get a 25/25/25 recipe to a liter. This will better suit the modern palate.

awesome! just what I was looking for. I have known about spanish absinthe only as being of high quality like swiss or french but very unique, haven't had the chance to try it yet nor did I know the history-so thanks! I'll be sure to pick up a bottle soon, but I'll definitely try this recipe too looks great, thanks

well, I would say that if you have never smoked weed or anything like that and you drank a lot of strong absinthe you might consider it a "trip" out of ignorance but its more of an "alcohol-sativa" and just like a strong haze or something you can get a head high that makes you seem a bit more...dreamy or something, idk, it made my tracers really strong

I have heard though that it may have been cheaper absinthe that had some kind of copper, or lead like you said, in it that was actually poisoning people? It kind of reminds me of that salamander vodka that was thought to make you trip-but in fact it was just poisoning people

but if you look at the history I think its obvious the biggest thing was the wine companies getting pissed off, and all the propaganda-  it really struck me as very similar to the story of cannabis today

then why can I go to the any liquour store in the US and buy absinthe with the thujone content % listed on the packaging? Its not illegal anymore.

On a more positive note, I have recently read that an herb called Elecampane was sometimes used in french and swiss absinthe recipes.

seriously dude, buy an american absinthe, buy a czech one, and buy a swiss, spanish or french one
american one will be like pretty much regular alcohol
czech one will literally taste like varnish
swiss spanish or french will taste like a delicious (although for some its an acquired taste) licorice lemonade with all sorts of different flavors and varieties to explore, and if regular alcohol is an indica, this would be a sativa

and btw, did you watch that vid at the top? the modern marvel thing talks about the FDA regulations

What you need good Sir is a repost of my "Absinthe Buyers & Drinkers Guide" thread:

========================================================

Video on how to drink Absinthe (auto download)

The market is saturated with all sorts of crap at sometimes outrageous prices. It is important to realize that a lot of "Absinthes" you can buy quite often have nothing to do with real Absinthe. Here's advice on which kinds to buy, at what price, and how to prepare it. The preparation is detailed in the attached video.

OK, here goes.

Absinthe can be bought in bottles of 0.1, 0.2, 0.5 and 1 liter.

For liters, you can expect to pay $50-$150. Since a serving of absinthe before dilution measures 20-30ml, this boils down to $1-$5 per glass.
Here are brands that come highly recommended:

DUPLAIS (Balance, Verte, Blanche)
FRANCOIS GUY
HELFRICH (Verte, La Blanche)
JADE (Edouard, Nouvelle Orleans, PF 1901, Verte Suisse)
LA VALOTE (Bovet, Fornoni, Martin)
LASALA (spanish Absenta, can be had for $35/liter)
SEGARRA (spanish Absenta)
UN EMILE 68 (also their La Blanche)
VERSINTHE (Verte and especially La Blanche)
VERTE DE FOUGEROLLES

These 20 Absinthes from 10 houses all are top notch quality, contrary to the extensive list of crappy or even false Absinthes. You can expect to pay $75 a liter on average.

As you can see there are two kinds of Absinthe: Verte (green) and La Blanche (white). Both are traditional. Basically the distilled Absinthes are La Blanche, and when additive herbs are steeped into it it gains flavor and a green color, producing a Verte.

If you have not a clue which to select my personal choice for the beginner would be to buy a 0.5 liter bottle of Duplais Balance (costs about $35, 15-25 glasses) which is a rather good Verte absinthe, and to buy an absinthe spoon with it.

You can use a white wine glass to serve Absinthe:

Make sure the glass can comfortably hold 130ml (30+100) or 90ml (20+60) which your Absinthe requires, and that it is fairly wide so it can fit an absinthe spoon. If you want to improvise entirely, a metal tea-strainer can be put on the glass to hold the sugarcube, and a teaspoon can be used to stir the dilute Absinthe afterwards.

An Absinthe preparation that's good for all kinds is to take a wine glass, pour in 30ml (20ml) of Absinthe, then pour 100ml (60ml) icecold water over one sugar cube on an Absinthe spoon, then stirring until all sugar is dissolved in the dilute Absinthe. Upon diluting, most good absinthe turns cloudy (the "louche") or even becomes so cloudy as to become non-transparent. This is usually a good sign, whereas absence of a louche usually is a bad sign.

You drink Absinthe by taking a sip, and spreading it through your mouth for some time before swallowing. Let the aftertaste linger before you sip some more. It is all about the taste, and a good Absinthe has a lot of taste to it. You should relax and take your time for enjoying Absinthe - if a glass lasts you at least twenty minutes before its empty, you are on the right track. Absinthe is not for chugging, and isn't about getting hammered either.

I cannot stress enough that Absinthe should always be diluted with water, 2-5 parts of water to one part of Absinthe. Drinking it neat is like drinking lemonade syrup neat: you can't expect it to taste good that way. Adding one cube of sugar is most common, some add two and others none. Sugar helps to bring out the flavor.

It's important to realize that Absinthe, real Absinthe, is a drink with often a strong anise flavor to it. If you don't like anise, chances are you won't like Absinthe.

Absinthe is best reserved for before or after dinner, or at the close of day, alone or discussing with friends. I recommend against drinking more than three glasses on a given day: if alcohol becomes a factor it is best to switch to a less refined drink better suited for stiff drinking. Absinthe is too expensive to get drunk on, it has too much flavor for continued drinking, and may give rise to a fiendish hangover if drank in excess. For the frequent drinker, one glass of absinthe a day is the most you should drink of it, and preferably more days without absinthe than with to keep it special.

========================================================

I'm going to give you one suggestion almost guaranteed to please you if you like Absinthe:

DUPLAIS BALANCE

Its one of the worlds finest Absinthes, and for its quality (a five star authentic absinthe) it is the cheapest.

It is psychoactive in the way Absinthes are psychoactive. I find it gives you drunkennness with clarity and a tendency to contemplation. It is subtle, drink it as the first drug of the day, when you are fully sober. If you smoke pot the subtleties of Absinthe are lost, so save the joint for after you enjoyed it enough.

You drink Absinthe, in descending order of importance:

1..for the flavor
2..for the ritual
3..for the psychoactivity

I'm pretty sure you don't "Brew" it.

Regardless, why don't you spell it out for me why this is, instead of writing one sentence responses.

seriously, I'd like to know why you believe this.

There's been a resurgence in traditional absinthe since the early 2000s. A lot of commercial stuff is made using maceration followed by distillation followed by a secondary maceration like absinthe was made a ~100 years ago.

All the absinthe I've seen in the stores here have been expensive as shit. I can make it a lot cheaper, prolly better too.

I tried it once using a recipe that Wiccan Seeker posted, using a one gallon electric still.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/6481780/fpart/2/vc/1

Wasn't near as good as absinthe that I've bought online, but was still pretty damn good.

 nice. I really hope to work on it this summer once I have the funds and the free time.

On a funny note, as soon as I walked in to my night class today I instantly smelled that distinct absinthe smell, put a grin on my face

me and a friend were going to distill our own absinthe....

our recipe called for macerating the herbs for a few days...it's been four years now. i have the jar right here on my desk. the liquid inside is black and tastes incredibly incredibly bad. hopefully will get off my arse and make a still someday soon. (in my imagination, because that would be illegal in the police state i live in).

on another note on my recent trip to europe i bought a bottle of jade edouard for like 60 bucks, better than the EASY 200 you can pay in a bottle shop here. i just wish duty free allowances were higher! jade is pretty good by the way, though i also like doubs as a cheap option.

I think absinthe is just hype. I have tryed it many times. I have tryed 2 Czech brands, a French brand, a Spainish brand and a British brand. My first few times trying it I got too drunk to remember what it was like. I have tryed it in moderation and I have experimented with sugar carmilization and burning the alcohol. My conclusion is that absinthe is total BULLSHIT. It will not make you trip. The taste is IMO awfull. If you like licorice you will like the taste of absinthe. It remimds me of the Dutch candy dropjes. Those things are fucking nasty. Seriously though, absinthe is not psychedelic at all. The only way that you can trip with this stuff is by bashing yourself in the head with the bottle.

I consider it to be the "sativa" of alcohol while everything else is "indica"

its got a nice uplifting quality to it which makes it a good choice for working on homework or in social situations, etc.
I will admit you have to get used to the taste but once you do its really good (also imo you should always let it sit around for a while, especially if you aren't used to the licorice flavor) when you get used to it, it tastes like a very complicated lemonade type flavor :awesomenod:

Yeah, it does have it's own sort of buzz.

I'm going to have to invest in about 20lbs of sugar real soon. :awesomenod:
