yes the problem is drying out, i tried to use a trash bag in a liner in a MSG and both contam'd..where as the monotub's with just polyfil colonized perfect and fast..

i'd say micro pore tape over the holes or tyvek either or on MSG's

Now we are saying that bags might not be necessary. I get that. But what would you do if you are using for example Morelman's Modified Tub ?

Would covering the holes with micropore allow enough GE without too much AE? Or because of the small number of holes, would it be better to just leave them be open? Or am I way off with this idea?

I'd also like to see what is recommended for this.

And even though I don't yet have that green flag from you guys, I have a hybrid tub pretty much uncovered on day 3-4 of colonization. I'm curious to see what happens, even if it leads to contam hell (not that I want this...), so that I know for certain not to ever do that again.

I think the greater concern is the substrate drying out so long as everything was properly pasteurized because hpoo is pretty contam resistant, right? wrong? fail?

I'd go with micropore tape over the holes, and manual fanning once every other day. :super:

The other option IS to place in a bag, loosely, and open it up to 'burp' it once a day.

@Bio- both of what contamed? you aren't using a bag liner inside the tub?

I'm definitely leaning towards and ready to make a 64qt monotub, but I don't have one of those teethed, large bits. Any way around this for a poor college student?

Anything circular & metal that you can heat & push through that's between 1-2" in diameter. Or just go buy a spade bit for $3...

you can get  a peice of metal pipe whatever size you want, i normally use 1 1/2 or 2 inch heat it and push thru for the holes, or if you're good with a box cutter :-P

i use plastic liners for the substrate, but I tried to use plastic to seal up the holes on the side of the MSG's...basicly, picture a trashcah with the bag in it..my sub was in the bottom, and the holes were in the trashcan

but the trashbag didn't allow air..then i placed the top on, with holes and micropore tape, but it still got funky because of the plastic lining allowing it to sweat too much

"Hole saws" are actually usually what they're called. A 2" hole saw will run you about $5.00 or less. :super:

Using a hot knife is bull shit. I learned the hard way on that one! :smbfacepalm:

So wait you guys let monotubs get light during colonization??

am I tripping balls or have I heard to NOT give them light till fruiting for the last 3 years?

yes! light up the darkness as Prof_P would say!

also, the topic has moved on to how much FAE is beneficial during colonization. the current stance, as far as I understand it, is allow as much as possible without drying out the substrate prior to fruiting conditions.

:frown: :frown: Light is a NO NO, during colonization. As light will initiate pins to form. Allowing or providing light, before full colonization is counter productive & leads to very uneven pin sets.

Think about it. Myc is giving colonization 100% of its attn. Before 100% colonization occurs, if you intro light, colonization slows, as the myc now has the signal ti start pinning.

Best colonize W/O light, then after full substrate colonization ---->case, then provide light & fresh air exchange. Then, as myc colonizes the casing surface, patch case over the early myc outcrops, so that other myc evenly colonizes the casing material.

Then, when myc crops out evenly, go for the gusto & fruit the puppies out.

  6T

Not arguing but all the stuff I read like this was false???

Correct.

I've noticed a significant decrease in colonization time due to having lights run.

Initially, it took me 4-5 weeks w/ MS, now it's 3-4 weeks. (For Jars)

did you check the date of the post? I didn't, I'm just asking...

I think evaporation from the substrate plays a more important role in triggering pins than light. That is not to say light isn't a pinning trigger.

The way I look at it, we are trying to replicate (or build upon the ideas from) a natural environment for the mushrooms. Except for spore germination in the center of a piece of :poop:, when is the organism completely deprived of light?

you could always run two cycles to test it yourself, see which way you like better... one monotub (or w/e you're using) with light during colonization and one without.

Well then what would initiate the pinning? Just extra fae?  Or you just pretty much colonize it in still air, then add fae?  Because i have def had pinning prior to full colonization.
