Yeah I was a history major as well for 1 semester... I love the subject but I don't wanna be a history teacher either
Though a history major does have more opportunities than that - I saw most of them as fairly hard to come by.
Plus you practically have to be half an English major with all those damn essays

I have an anthropology degree.... I have employment doing a mix of anthropology and computer science at an ivy league university. I think I'd be best to keep that private, but it is in the new england area.
Note, that I have no background in computer science, but it is a hobby. I have mixed feelings about how I should proceed for graduate studies. Now only if I could find a program that combined the two.

Yeah. A degree in speech communications. Although it hasn't helped me much lately. I don't plan on being in yard maintenance forever though. I've taken out a huge loan so that I can go to car wash school in the spring.

In fairness, it's like this for pretty much all of the basic sciences.

i should have stuck with computer science, which was what i was accepted to uni as. the problem with psychology is that everyone assumes you are a pretentious asshat (which may be true) trying to diagnose them at every second. no matter how many studies i run or stats courses i take, i am doomed to forever be taken as a second class scientist (which is true). oh well, maybe i'll get into a master's program and land an okay job counseling middle school kids...

I have to choose a major next year, assuming I get into the school I want (I'm at a community college right now) I have no idea what I want to do I'll probably go with psychology, anthropology, or linguistics or some bullshit....
It sucks because I'm definitely capable of getting a high earning degree, but I'd rather kill myself than be an engineer or doctor. Fuck, I might just be a teacher just so I can have summers off. Plus I could realistically have a master's by the time I'm 22 cause I'm only 18 and almost have my associate's, so it'd be kinda cool to lord over high school students and be only like 5 years older than them

Plus that piece of paper means a lot when finding a job.

Haha, I had a 22 year old English teacher my senior year. She was quite attractive too. All the male students made it to class every day. Course they were distracted during lecture.

i have friends with no degree at all that make $150k/year. the IT industry couldnt give a shit if you have a degree or not.. as long as you have the experience.
the degree could get you in for the interview but a certification could do the same thing and it will cost you 1/1000th of the price of a 4 year college.. and the information would be more relevant/up to date.

the certs help, yes. but you can buy "Master CCNA in 30 Days" and other bullshit stuff for any cert out there. A cert won't draw the respect that a degree from UCLA would... Because you know the guy from UCLA could go get the cert just as easily if you'd pay for him to do it.
anyhow, I have 3 years experience in IT, and I'm still going back to school to finish my 4 year. there's no reason for me not to IMHO... why fight uphill battles at every future job interview i have when it's just a couple years of my time?

I'm taking 14 units of gen eds this semester. At first when I realized how basic and boring these classes were I thought the semester was going to be hell, but then it occurred to me that it leaves me with tons of time to do what I wanna do. It's like a semi-vacation. I'm taking the opportunity to start some new hobbies.
I still can't wait to get back to the real classes, though. Last semester I took general chemistry and I actually really enjoyed being bent over the text for hours putting all the pieces together. It's really rewarding stuff when you work it all out, it pays you back for the time you invest in it.

be careful making that assumption.
i took "the history of science" this semester because i figured a history course related to what i actually have interest in (as opposed to actual history) would be at least half decent and all i can think of now is how much i want to shoot myself over it.
the professor takes her job wayyyyyy too seriously and i honestly think she thinks the people who took the class took it because they actually care about what early scientists thought.
sometimes i just want to run up to the front of the class and beat her old ass down. its that annoying.
im probably going to fail because she expects us to write deep intellectual papers about people who had completely wrong theories, and i just cant do it. when i hear "and they thought the solar system was geocentric" i dont have anything stimulating pop in my mind. the only thing that pops in my mind is "wow, they sound like christians"
and when i turn that in (because i have to, i cant even pretend to give a shit about this stuff, its that horrible) she gives me barely passing/failing grades.

sorry. i had to rant.

if anyone could learn the same information by reading a book on their own than the degree isnt worth as much. this statement cheapens the value of a UCLA degree more than anything else.
4 year degrees dont make sense in a lot of IT fields.. by the time you are finished the information you learned is irrelevant.
if you yourself could start working in the field without a degree it is pretty logical to say you dont need one.
experience is king. youre already ahead of the game.

i dont see why people just dont pick a field of trade?! im in a program to get my aircraft/powerplant cert and its only a 2 year program that im guaranteed a job once im done and on top of that i can be picky and start at 60k+ with a extra semester i receive a associates in aeronautical science.. and im only another 2 years from a bachelor degree if i want.. i just dont get it.. why the fuck would you wanna do any of those things? i know girls around here fucking flock to the film classes and production and performing art classes.. those classes are always full to the brim instantly and useless as fuck.. and i have a friend thats in psycology WTF is that good for? being a psychologist? i just picked the short route and took a trade related subject that pays..

Yes, but certs are in one particular area of expertise. One concentration. Whereas a computer science degree encompasses many concepts.
And I still use things that I learned almost 10 years ago. To say that the information becomes obsolete is just plain wrong.
e.g.: Object-oriented programming hasn't changed one bit since I took the class. I can still program in Java, C, C++, C#, etc. Sure, new commands have been added, but that does not invalidate the knowledge.
Just one example.
Technologies typically evolve; they don't just radically change. No more time to continue this discussion as I'm late for... class.

No, but often times I feel like my major could have been up there. I love what I learned, but being unmarketable with debt sucks.

Well, maybe a doctor wouldn't be so bad, but science-y stuff just bores the shit out of me for the most part. Sure, I'm really good at learning science and math when I apply myself, but I don't find any joy in it. Just saying I'd probably rather be dead (not really though) than work in a job I hated for 40+ years. Take my mom for example. She's a medical technologist and makes about 80k a year. So decent pay, 8 weeks paid vacation a year.... but I'd still rather make half that being a teacher than doing her boring ass job.

Nope, multimedia programming for me (basically HTML, making websites, etc.). Microdoses of LSA have helped me out pretty nicely in that class.
The dude smoking out of his N64 controller is a fucking genius. I am now looking around my house for random shit to turn into a bong. My Xbox maybe?

be careful making that assumption.
i took "the history of science" this semester because i figured a history course related to what i actually have interest in (as opposed to actual history) would be at least half decent and all i can think of now is how much i want to shoot myself over it.
the professor takes her job wayyyyyy too seriously and i honestly think she thinks the people who took the class took it because they actually care about what early scientists thought.
sometimes i just want to run up to the front of the class and beat her old ass down. its that annoying.
im probably going to fail because she expects us to write deep intellectual papers about people who had completely wrong theories, and i just cant do it. when i hear "and they thought the solar system was geocentric" i dont have anything stimulating pop in my mind. the only thing that pops in my mind is "wow, they sound like christians"
and when i turn that in (because i have to, i cant even pretend to give a shit about this stuff, its that horrible) she gives me barely passing/failing grades.

sorry. i had to rant.
I couldn't agree more. If I hear the name Freud again in class...

I don't really understand this either, vocational schools are very successful at getting people decent-paying jobs but everybody seems to aim for some fruity flower-scented college degree.
I'm going to college now, but it's because I've spent serious time thinking about what I want to do with myself as an adult, and my family can afford to support me comfortably while I study.
That said, my dad went to vocational school to get a job with his first employer as a computer technician, and he's still with them today as a software engineer for particle colliders and other such completely insane devices of exploration of the universe. Vocational schools cost money up front but they will fucking get you places.

See and that's what it's all about. What I really wish I could do is just have enough money to buy like 3 houses and rent them out for eternal lazy person income. Then do whatever the fuck I want

I blame a lot of this on high schools. They have this ridiculous expectation that most of their students are going to go to college and get college degrees. And accordingly, they have a largely irrelevant curriculum that is not tailored at all for immediate employment or vocational schools. Then the students get unreasonable expectations of their college degree as being a kind of 'get employed for free card', which it isn't.

It's true.
I actually read a funny article about this the other day, I saved it- Study Says College Isn't For Everyone
My favorite quote is at the end: "Higher ed policy analyst Sandy Baum told the AP the idea is to enhance opportunities for everyone. 'What we'd like is a system where people of all backgrounds could choose to be plumbers or to be philosophers,' Baum added. 'Those options are not open. But we certainly need plumbers so it's wrong to think we should be nervous about directing people in that route.'"

One of my majors is philosophy, and yeah, I'd have to agree it's basically useless in terms of career opportunities afterwards unless you want to become a lawyer or teach philosophy, and there's so much competition in both these areas that you'll probably just end up working at Starbucks anyway. I'm majoring in it because I find the subject material interesting, however, and not because I expect to land a career with it. That's what one of my other majors is for: mathematics.

I plan to teach at either the high school or community college level for a bit; primarily because I find it entertaining and for the free time inherent in summers off so I can write and try to get something published on the side.

I am a Philosophy/Psychology major and Spanish minor
the article is right, majoring strictly in philosophy is almost always career suicide. philosophers are sort of martyrs. people take them for granted. most people now assume things like racism are bad, but a hundred years ago almost nobody thought twice about racism at all. the change is due to the hard work of ethical philosophers (working in conjunction with anthropologists/biologists/etc) . the entire idea of humans (let alone animals) having "rights" at all is the direct result of philosophical achievements in ethics and politics (kant, hobbes, locke, etc.) but most people just assume things are supposed to be the way they are, forgetting that they only got that way because of the hard work of certain individuals and groups among their ancestries who were thinking progressively.
