Yes, but certs are in one particular area of expertise. One concentration. Whereas a computer science degree encompasses many concepts.
And I still use things that I learned almost 10 years ago. To say that the information becomes obsolete is just plain wrong.
e.g.: Object-oriented programming hasn't changed one bit since I took the class. I can still program in Java, C, C++, C#, etc. Sure, new commands have been added, but that does not invalidate the knowledge.
Just one example.
Technologies typically evolve; they don't just radically change. No more time to continue this discussion as I'm late for... class.

No, but often times I feel like my major could have been up there. I love what I learned, but being unmarketable with debt sucks.

Well, maybe a doctor wouldn't be so bad, but science-y stuff just bores the shit out of me for the most part. Sure, I'm really good at learning science and math when I apply myself, but I don't find any joy in it. Just saying I'd probably rather be dead (not really though) than work in a job I hated for 40+ years. Take my mom for example. She's a medical technologist and makes about 80k a year. So decent pay, 8 weeks paid vacation a year.... but I'd still rather make half that being a teacher than doing her boring ass job.

Nope, multimedia programming for me (basically HTML, making websites, etc.). Microdoses of LSA have helped me out pretty nicely in that class.
The dude smoking out of his N64 controller is a fucking genius. I am now looking around my house for random shit to turn into a bong. My Xbox maybe?

be careful making that assumption.
i took "the history of science" this semester because i figured a history course related to what i actually have interest in (as opposed to actual history) would be at least half decent and all i can think of now is how much i want to shoot myself over it.
the professor takes her job wayyyyyy too seriously and i honestly think she thinks the people who took the class took it because they actually care about what early scientists thought.
sometimes i just want to run up to the front of the class and beat her old ass down. its that annoying.
im probably going to fail because she expects us to write deep intellectual papers about people who had completely wrong theories, and i just cant do it. when i hear "and they thought the solar system was geocentric" i dont have anything stimulating pop in my mind. the only thing that pops in my mind is "wow, they sound like christians"
and when i turn that in (because i have to, i cant even pretend to give a shit about this stuff, its that horrible) she gives me barely passing/failing grades.

sorry. i had to rant.
I couldn't agree more. If I hear the name Freud again in class...

I don't really understand this either, vocational schools are very successful at getting people decent-paying jobs but everybody seems to aim for some fruity flower-scented college degree.
I'm going to college now, but it's because I've spent serious time thinking about what I want to do with myself as an adult, and my family can afford to support me comfortably while I study.
That said, my dad went to vocational school to get a job with his first employer as a computer technician, and he's still with them today as a software engineer for particle colliders and other such completely insane devices of exploration of the universe. Vocational schools cost money up front but they will fucking get you places.

See and that's what it's all about. What I really wish I could do is just have enough money to buy like 3 houses and rent them out for eternal lazy person income. Then do whatever the fuck I want

I blame a lot of this on high schools. They have this ridiculous expectation that most of their students are going to go to college and get college degrees. And accordingly, they have a largely irrelevant curriculum that is not tailored at all for immediate employment or vocational schools. Then the students get unreasonable expectations of their college degree as being a kind of 'get employed for free card', which it isn't.

It's true.
I actually read a funny article about this the other day, I saved it- Study Says College Isn't For Everyone
My favorite quote is at the end: "Higher ed policy analyst Sandy Baum told the AP the idea is to enhance opportunities for everyone. 'What we'd like is a system where people of all backgrounds could choose to be plumbers or to be philosophers,' Baum added. 'Those options are not open. But we certainly need plumbers so it's wrong to think we should be nervous about directing people in that route.'"

One of my majors is philosophy, and yeah, I'd have to agree it's basically useless in terms of career opportunities afterwards unless you want to become a lawyer or teach philosophy, and there's so much competition in both these areas that you'll probably just end up working at Starbucks anyway. I'm majoring in it because I find the subject material interesting, however, and not because I expect to land a career with it. That's what one of my other majors is for: mathematics.

I plan to teach at either the high school or community college level for a bit; primarily because I find it entertaining and for the free time inherent in summers off so I can write and try to get something published on the side.
