Reusing Grow kits?
    #14042577 - 02/28/11 02:30 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

So -i have this prefertilized growkit- I just had to add water and it would grow 4-5 flushes of nice mushrooms. Since the Fourth flush is almost here now, i can't help wondering, is there any way, to take a spore print, and use the spores for restarting my growth? Keep in mind - i've never ever grown mushrooms before so i do not have any equipment except a box, that will stop producing in several days..

The way i was thinking;

Take 2 or 3 of the biggest mushroom caps, and put them on aluminium foil to dry and drop spores.

Mix the spores with water.

Pour them back into the growing box and see what happens. While regulating moisture by pouring water into the plastic bag with air filter (or leaving it open when too humid) the grow kit is in and letting it evaporate after fully submerging the substrate for 12 hours.
I'm worried and i think the substrate doesn't have any nutrients in it left after so many flushes, so i was thinking of trying with either straw or compost (mushrooms should grow very good in compost thats been lying under other compost for 4-5 years right?)

I don't have access or the money for a pressure cookers or making a new growing/ fruiting facility, maybe i have barely enough for a some spore syringes (but i'd have to wait ages for those) i only have an evaporation dish that i stole some years ago from chemistry class.

First problem, is it possible to do this without syringes?
Was thinking about just sterilizing a spoon with a flame or boiling water. and scoop the spores up & drop.
second problem, is my old growing box still good for new breeds? nutrient and contaminant wise.
Third, how much spores should i use?
Fourth, After i "plant" them, does the box needs to be in the dark for 3-5 days?

There really is not a lot of information on this.
i do not have the money to make a terrarium, even 20€ is a lot of money for me during these hard times without a decent job

1. tear mushroom in 2
2. scrape inside of mushroom. place in petri dish
3. watch grow.
4. isolate rhizo.
5. ??
6. Profit.

you can not drop spoores and water in on your already used up substrate..you have to start over with grains or brf cakes, www.mushroomvideos.com < watch all the videos there, it'll giv eyou alot of useful information that should help you get started.

the guy knows nothing about growing from scratch and wants to learn so why be a dick about it? jokefox, seems everytime you post in someones thread you're a douche about it...i remember you first starting asking the same questions, and even alot dumber ones...so grow up a bit and cut them some slack..i started the same way, as well shea, noobieshroomie, citric, agar, ALL started not knowing wtf to do and learned by asking questions..if it was for members like you, noone would learn they'd just give up..

the cloning is a fairly easy and inexpensive process. quite fun and learnfull about the mushroom cycle. i'd give that a try at least.

could someone give me more details on this? with what do i fill the petri dish and what is "rhizo"?

Also, no vermiculite. only fertile ground, straw and used up substrate.
This might be a ghetto grow, but i'm excited & motivated. From what i've read so far i need a pinning strategy to get the mycelium to grow. Do i need to worry about this?

He calls it "agar" I've never heard of this. Is it hard to get? I've looked it up on wikipedia and since i'm not native english (belgian) and the wikipedia page is hard to understand, and it dutch it only mentions something about using it food. Let alone that is mentions where to get it.

Agar agar is a replacement for gelatin for veganists and so forth. You can find it in most health food stores. Some Chinese asian type of supermarkets can carry it. Use the search function to acquire additional information on the recipe. Not hard to find.

In addition you will need 'lichte mout extract poeder' which you can find at your local hobby beer brewery shop they also carry petri dishes and other stuf you might find useful.

If i'd knew how to rate people, i'd give you 5/5 shrooms for being incredibly helpful!

If i get to the point where i find mycelium growing in my petri dish, I'd be very, very happy  problem is, where do i go from there?
and i looked at the agar recipes.. ALL of them require something i don't have except the Honey + mashed potato combo, so i'm going with that. So, thats 1 problem solved.

If you dont know where to go from agar then you probably shouldnt start with it. You should either start out with the PF-tek or a monotub tek useing grain spawn, if you dont know how to do these things then agar wont get you very far.

P.S. to rate people click the shrooms above there avatar.

once you got decent (clean growth) in the petri dishes you can put a wedge of the growth in a jar with "rye" 'hele rogge korrels' i get them at our local windmill but i think most bakery supplies will carry it. You got some other things like BRF but i myself never tried anything except rye-'rogge'.

I myself use agar with 'mout extract' and dextrose. For me its pretty easy to get but im to lazy to work with potatoes lol

Oh by the way rhizo means rhizomorphic growth. it means stringy mycelium which usually stands for good rate of growth and good genetics. its the type people are usually after because it produces great flushes of mushrooms.

I do suggest you do some reading on the subject to avoid silly noob mistakes. Else if you want to try the hobby from scratch visit Azarius ( i hope there a sponser before i get my ass kicked. Sorry guys all other sponsor vendors i know off are north american) they carry spore syringes.
